No, this isn't anything new, as it came out in 2000-2001, I just found this cd at a resale shop and bought it today
It states on the back of the cd that "Each Atari title is faithfully reproduced down to the last detail, and each one is just as easy and fun to play."
We-ll, many Coleco licenses for the Atari 2600 also stated "plays like the real arcade game" back in the day, which was, quite frankly, a load of s*** for the most part, so this doesn't really mean anything here either, unfortunately.
So, I try Asteroids Deluxe first. Seemed legit at first, but then once I cleared a couple of screens I noticed the U. F. O.s were taking their time in coming out. Not quite right, but still fun though.
The original Asteroids fared worse. The small U. F. O. came out at 6000 points. That is NOT right. I'm sure I don't have to tell many people on here (or maybe none at all!) that they don't appear until 10,000 points or after. Maybe there's a way to mess around with the difficulty level but I'll spend some more time on this and report back later.
Then Gravitar...good lord, the gravity is WAY off. I'm not like the world record holder Dan Coogan or Detonator on here (also a very good player) but I can at least clear the first solar system, maybe get even further than that after getting Gravitrex Plus and beating it (I just haven't attended a local gaming expo that usually has it since I got G. Plus to find out). I couldn't even destroy one planet, plus the enemy ships that come out after you if you spend too much time on the solar system map come out immediately, even as you're turning and thrusting towards a planet and not taking your time in choosing or anything, it's ridiculous.
Tempest seems the best so far, although a little hard to control on the keyboard. Like with a game's difficulty level, I haven't looked around yet to see if it has a sensitivity level to using the keys. Battlezone I can't say yet since I have to find out what the controls are and remap them, but then I might not bother with it if it follows the original's controls (i. e. one button will control one tread in one direction, another one controls another tread in another direction, etc. It worked well when they made the 2600 version using just one joystick, which I'd like here) but it looks good though.
There doesn't seem to be a "vector glow", so the games don't really look right, but again, I haven't looked this stuff up yet to see if there's a feature like this or not. Battlezone seemed the most authentic as far as its "look" went though.
I don't see how Digital Eclipse could've screwed this up, as they did a really good job on the Williams' Arcade's Greatest Hits package for the Sega Genesis (don't know about the other platforms of the SNES and PS though), but then that might've been Infogrammes demand to have them turned over really quickly, as I know that was a complaint from Kurt and Marty when they did the Atari games (Breakout, Centipede, Asteroids and Lunar Lander) for Taco Bell years ago and some glitches followed. Kurt also programmed a Breakout handheld that ended up not getting released, as they used some other programmer's version instead that didn't play like the original. Kurt wasn't happy about it either, and I'm sure Marty feels the same way in trying to correctly preserve poor Atari's memory and legacy. This might've been the same problem here.
Full line-up:
*Asteroids
*Asteroids Deluxe
*Battlezone
*Centipede
*Crystal Castles
*Gravitar
*Millipede
*Missile Command
*Pong
*Super Breakout
*Tempest
*Warlords
*Memorabilia images, original press releases, desktop themes, and more included
Meh so far Maybe it'll get better, or "less worse", perhaps I should say. I'm just a bit depressed right now.
Oh well, only $3, plus a bit of a time killer and it's interesting.
