Have you all seen this new mini virtual pinball cabinet being sold through Walmart? www.walmart.com/ip/Haunted-House-Black-Hole-3D-Digital-Pinball-Machine-12-in-1-Gottlieb-Titles-ToyShock-77000/211973564I'm thinking about getting one of these. What do you all think? I'm not a competitive pinball player at all but my wife and I have been into it for ten years or so. Playing various pinball video games, visiting the Pinball Hall of Fame, etc.. Our local pizza spot has a Bride of Pinbot, Lord of the Rings, and Fish Tales. We enjoy it and our kids are starting to show interest in it. I've wanted to build out a virtual pinball machine but a lack of wood working skills has prevented me from making an attempt. I figure worst case with this I can throw a PC in it and use one of the vpinball front ends.

I haven't seen the ones in Wal-Mart specifically, but I've seen tables like these before. They are really cool because you can play different tables and they have haptic feedback that simulates real tables quite well. These ones on Wal-Mart are cheaper than the ones I've seen, so I can't speak to their quality. As a concept, though, these are definitely cool.

We enjoy it and our kids are starting to show interest in it. That's great! It's crazy pinball is making such a comeback that there are even companies here in Texas making machines. I'm thinking about getting one of these. What do you all think? I've wanted to build out a virtual pinball machine but a lack of wood working skills has prevented me from making an attempt. I figure worst case with this I can throw a PC in it and use one of the vpinball front ends. It depends, as I played Mideivel Madness on a Hyperpin-type device at a local gaming expo a few weeks back. It didn't seem very "real". They did a better job emulating it on The Pinball Arcade app for the iPad, although those Hyperpins are older. So it just depends on certain things. Likewise, I've never heard of, nor played the home one you linked to in your post.

I own 3 pinball machines and play competitively occasionally.
Personally, I wouldn't touch virtual pinball with a bargepole, every one I've tried sucks, the flippers have lag, the 2D display just don't work and there's no dynamics.
It's worse than playing Vectrex games on a raster monitor.

That's how I feel about the Arcade1Up cabinets so I totally get where you're coming from. I can't stand those things and they seem borderline unplayable to me. At least there are more powerful MAME cabs and FPGA systems we can use. There just doesn't seem to be a good alternative for pinball though. I would probably feel the same way if I had real pinball machines. I'm generally a purist when it comes to this stuff but in this case it is hard to be. I keep looking for a great deal but I think I missed that window. Prices seem to be skyrocketing. Nothing is worse than Vectrex emulation on an raster monitor imo. If I didn't have a real Vectrex then I don't think I would ever play it. VectorX, it looks like this mini table uses the Pinball Arcade software so hopefully the table/physics are emulated well. Medieval madness is one of my favorite tables. I played it a ton on the Pinball Hall of Fame Xbox 360 game (Still my favorite pinball video game) and only got to play it in real life a few times. There aren't any near me. I tend to like the stuff made by Farsight studios. The Pinball Arcade, Pinball Hall of Fame games, etc. Anyway, I pre-ordered it. I'm still thinking about it. I have a few days to cancel. It's one of those things I just want to be amazing but probably won't be... haha.

It came. It is pretty much what I expected. There are 1 or 2 tables that are not as smooth as I'd like but overall a good value in my opinion. I'll definitely be modding this with a PC setup unless they made it hard to do. I would like to be able to switch between original and whatever I do to it but we will see. It won't be any time soon. Arcade USA did a review on it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=im0xhW6OC6s
