Me too. Maybe this is the one that causes me to get a 2600. I just read some really good reviews of it.
Fun for me that it actually looks to eliminate the main thing that attracted me to Juno First, but seems to replace it with something equally interesting.

I think it is remarkable how the 2600 keeps on getting pushed to do more and more.

I love Juno First! I Played it quite a lot on my Mame Cab, And I always cranked up the volume as I REALLY love the sounds of the arcade version. The scoring, the defender like fire, galaga like patterns, the bonus ship challenge plus score multiplier and the twist on the regular bottom of the screen shooter with vertical perspective makes this a pretty unique game. In my opinion truly one of those underappreciated not very well known titles, which deserve more attention. I've only seen one in the real, at least in Europe but I suspect even worldwide not such a big release in numbers? As a big vertical arcade shooter fan myself, I'm convinced any shooter fan will like this game a lot.
Play it in mame, it is perfectly emulated.

The game dropped in yesterday, and it is so awesome, I can´t put it in words I just can´t believe the 2600 can push so many and fast sprites on screen at the same time. There is a hint of flicker when the screen is packed with enemies, but nowhere near to the point where it becomes annoying, or that you can´t see them. You really have to see this game with your own eyes, it´s super smooth. And that titel screen track is really great, I got my AV modded 2600 hooked to my soundsystem, and it sure delivers a punch I also got the arcade version on a 60 in 1 JAMMA PCB, but I actually like the 2600 version better now, it´s just too damn cool Gotta get my hand on one of those savekey´s so I can save my highscores. If you have a 2600, you MUST get this game

Juno First is a classic imo. I programmed a version for Xbox360 years ago that I sadly lost in an HD failure.

I programmed a version for Xbox360 years ago that I sadly lost in an HD failure. Oh man, sorry to hear about that would have loved to have seen that version in action. Do you have any footage of it? How about a Vectrex Version next?

No footage I'm afraid. It was in a filled 3D vector 'tron' style. I'd love to do a Juno First style game for Vectrex but I have plenty on my todo list before I get to that. I lost another Xbox 360 game in that HD failure but I plan to release that game on Vectrex eventually (not revealing any more details yet though )

Juno First always reminded me of Defender from a different perspective.
The 2600 Juno First homebrew is good but it always crashes when I play it on my 7800.

I have the 2600 version, which I really like. It is quite well done. I've never tried it on my 7800, though. Might have to try it to see if I have the same issue.

One of my biggest problems - particularly back in the day - starting new projects while other things are waiting to be finished. Actually, that would probably be my number one advice to new developers - stick to a project to the end, it's very easy to get distracted by another cool idea. Especially once you hit that part of the project where things get difficult or all the bits you've avoided because you don't like doing them now need to be done. (Of course, I've actually just done that myself, starting a new project with Specter half done. Be smarter than me!) Anyway, Juno First was one of my favorite shooters back in the day. IMO, the background is not that bad (it could be really simplified [the original game does this on some levels] or even ignored if you really need the cycles). I think the difficulty lies more in the sheer number of objects that can be onscreen especially on some of the formations levels for example: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=pFH93faAfMU#t=31028 enemies + enemy shots & bombs (always have to assume worst case scenario) www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=pFH93faAfMU#t=54212+12+12 (36) enemies + enemy shots & bombs Is problem. This .BIN is just simple visual proof of concept from ten or fifteen years ago. I probably didn't waste more than... too many... hours on it Attachments:thetis.bin (1.62 KB)

^_ Cool. Looking forward to testing that .bin when i get a chance. .. I have the 2600 version now and it is decent but it pretty much eliminates my favorite aspect of the game, (the shifting perspective graphics), which i'm sure could be done effectively on vectrex. Gameplay wise all i really care about in Juno First is the ability to move backwards. Otherwise i wouldn't mind seeing totally different game objectives, with fewer enemies. .. I can't remember how it goes in the arcade, but i was pretty disappointed on 2600 how minimally the "rescuing" effects the game, (only one per level), which for me really negates the Defender comparisons people make.
.. I think you could have a sweet overlay for a Vectrex Juno First, with cascading color bands getting thinner as you approach the horizon.
Lots of options for renaming the game for a port too. Jupiter First, Minerva First ... Juno Second .. Juneau First, Ketchikan First, Anchorage Second.. I guess the Atari guys already remade it with the original title, but if you were to alter the gameplay significantly, (like i suggest) a renaming would seem appropriate even if there aren't any copyright issues.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this game was Defender. Vertical instead of horizontal. The audio even sounds very similar. I don't remember seeing this game back in the day..
"Juno" makes me think of Roland's analog synthesizers from the 80s.

I don't remember seeing this game back in the day.. I never saw it either. It wasn't a huge hit or anything, hence why it's nice for people to port obscure, but good games such as this elsewhere
