Just wondering, as they just hit the market.

I may skip this generation of gaming. I was an active participant in the last one, and I'm still trying to pick up the remaining pieces of my dignity. There are a lot of great Xbox 360 and PS3 games, but the market is overrun by poorly made war shooters and assembly line sequels. The Wii is essentially exempt from this charge, however, as Nintendo tried their best to revitalize their franchises and adapt them to the innovations in technology. Whether they succeeded in this endeavor is anyone's call, but I happen to like most of the games anyway. If I have one complaint about Nintendo, it's that their best games are getting crushed under the weight of intrusive motion controls and other current-gen gimmicks. But the true spirit of gaming is still alive and well. By comparison, in the last six years, I feel Microsoft and Sony have offered nothing but the spirit of greed and laziness. The star publishers are pushing out the same game year after year and repackaging it with a new title and box art. In fact, the bulk of Microsoft's and Sony's revenues are coming from these pathetic excuses for video games, and that mostly explains why I don't wish to be a part of this generation. I'd rather show my great disdain for modern gaming: I am planning to "pull the plug" on my Xbox 360 next week in anticipation of the latest addition to my gaming library. Yes, I've finally joined the PS2 ranks. Call it an early Christmas present, or something. Just don't call it a PS4, or it might get insulted and walk away. Sadly, I don't have enough room in my entertainment center to squeeze in another addition to the library, so one system needs to gracefully bow out. Realistically, the PS2 ("fat" model) won't fit on any of the horizontal shelves, so the decision came down to the Wii and the 360. And since the Wii is backwards compatible with my GameCube games, it looks like the 360 will be rotated out for the time being. This may change if I pick up another 360 game in the future. I'd like to give Elder Scrolls: Skyrim a chance, but I'm more interested in giving the PS2 the chance it never had. So, I'm looking forward to days and nights of Final Fantasy, Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill 2. Oh, right . . . now I need to get the games. More on that later, I suppose.

It's not released in France yet (will be next week). But anyway everybody is saying that if you haven't pre-ordered the PS4, you won't have one before end of january. And since there's not a lot of games (and no game that seems interesting to me) I'll just wait a bit more before deciding if I buy one or not Actually, I think I would rather buy a PS3 if I manage to find one at a good price (because there are games like Journey, Ico HD, Shadow of the Colossus HD, Ni No Kuni, that I'd like to play, and are only on the PS3 ). wyldephang >> I believe that Skyrim is better on PC than on PS3 or Xbox360 (you have a lot of mods that are available and can really enhance the gaming experience).

Yes, I've finally joined the PS2 ranks. Sadly, I don't have enough room in my entertainment center to squeeze in another addition to the library I'm going to get a PS2 as well at some point. Also like you, I have no room for one right now though. What's the backwards compatibility with the PS4? Will it take everything from PS1-3?

No, there's absolutely no backward compatibility with the PS4 That's why I think I'm gonna take a PS3 instead (the first version is compatibles with PS2 games, but not the Slim version if I remember well).

No, there's absolutely no backward compatibility with the PS4 Wow, that's a load I'd say that's rather unthinkable in this day and age, but who knows, maybe it can't be done in this case (and/or would add to the cost of the console?)? That's why I think I'm gonna take a PS3 instead (the first version is compatibles with PS2 games, but not the Slim version if I remember well). Yeah, I couldn't remember what it is that I had heard about it, but I knew it wasn't 100% compatible with everything.

Luitoine, my laptop won't handle Skyrim, so I'll have to settle with a console version. As for the PlayStation 3, I think the first model is backwards compatible with most (or maybe all) PS2 and PS1 games. It is a shame that Sony and Microsoft are dropping support for their PS3 and 360 games, and even more of a shame that they expect gamers to repurchase digital copies of all of the old games on a cloud service. Modern gaming just gets better and better, doesn't it?

I also read that PS4 has ZERO backwards compatibility. What I read though said that the reason for this is that the PS3 was very difficult to program for, in retrospect poorly designed, and it would have been a very obscure and expensive feature to include with the PS4.
I think you can expect the download service to offer a lot of older games though. I do not have any experience with it, but the PSNetwork is supposed to be one of the better assets of the Sony consoles. I know that both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are available for download now. I'm not certain that PS3 DOWNLOADS are compatible with PS4, but it's worth looking into. .. I guess this sucks if you already have a PS3 and would have to buy the games again to download on PS4, but at least they will be available. Seems like no one here bought into PS3 anyway.
Like Luitoine said, the very first version of PS3 is backwards compatible with PS2. THE OTHERS ARE NOT. And none are compatible with PS1. Personally, if I was in the market for a PS3 I would DEFINITELY still go for the newer model, unless the market has changed DRAMATICALLY. The early versions originally retailed for considerably more money than even a brand new one does right now, and there had been some demand for the backwards compatible ones second hand. I think that the slim model is an improved model and a much more reliable machine. .. A slim PS2 and a slim PS3 do not take up much more space than a fat PS3, and the two slim models can probably be attained for less money than a single backwards compatible PS3.
I won't be buying a PS4 or a PS3 unless the Last Guardian is released exclusively on one of those consoles. And even then I still might not buy one.
HD is not a selling point for me and in fact I find it annoying how sharp and clear this stuff is. I don't have an HD TV anyway. ... I'm also annoyed by the changes they made to the controller and I'm pretty sure i read that PS3 controllers are not compatible.
Internet connectivity is not a desirable feature for me either, especially at the moment not having any where near sufficient bandwidth to play video games online, or even download a full featured game. It seems these days that the games and consoles are being made to COMPLETELY DEPEND on internet connectivity, in some cases not even being playable without a connection. I can't and won't deal with that.
I just like that the new machines have more power, higher processing speed, if this enables older games and older style games to play more smoothly or have better basic functionality. And I guess I would like to have access to the occasional exceptional new game, which I assume will only be possible on the new console. But "hits" like GTA, Halo and Call of Duty are not games that I have any desire to play. I can't handle Final Fantasy either. Other well-liked games that I have seen played on recent gen consoles, such as Kingdom Hearts, Assassins Creed, God of War, Resident Evil and numerous sports games - DO NOT GET ME EXCITED.
If Last Guardian had come out for PS3 I would have bought that and the Ico Collection and Bioshock 1 and 2 and a few retro downloads and that's about it. .. But now not being able to use the controller that I want to use, they are pretty much starting from scratch in convincing me. Last Guardian has to come out and it has to be awesome, AT LEAST as good as the hype, for me to even begin considering PS4.
... And I've actually always been pretty skeptical that Last Guardian will measure up to Ico/SotC, since those were both very unique titles, while LG sort of looks like an arbitrary mash-up of the two previous games. I'd almost rather see an expanded version or even straight sequel to Colossus, with a new array of beasts, basically a redesign of the original, to offer the whole experience and challenge over again and with NEW CONTENT.

I guess this sucks if you already have a PS3 and would have to buy the games again to download on PS4, but at least they will be available. Seems like no one here bought into PS3 anyway. I think that even downloadable PS3 games won't be compatible with PS4 (which is really bad, because it would have been a game console with a lot of available games just after its release). The only way you'll be able to play PS3 games on a PS4 will be on steaming via Gaikai (which is not available yet, in Europe at least). Which means that you'll have to possess a good internet connection, and that when Sony decides to shut down the servers, you won't be able to play anymore (it's more like "renting" than "buying" a game)... Speaking of internet connectivity, it was said that it will be mandatory to play games on PS4 and XboxOne (as it is for some of the recent PC games like Diablo III and stuff), but finally it is not (at least some good news). I don't know what "modern gaming" will be, but since I'm not too much attached to HD graphics, and since I already have too much games to do, I'm not that impatient And for "The Last Guardian", I think we can wait at least one or two more years

I'm researching the purchase of a PS3. My daughter is really interested in playing a game called "Ni No Kuni" - a PS3 game by the animators from Studio Ghibli (Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle - basically my daughters' favorite movies.) The game play looks very much like playing within the Studio Ghibli universe.
It's still debatable if it's worth buying a $250 system for one particular game. The kids already have a Wii which keeps them plenty entertained.
But perhaps the PS3 will be our household's "Next Gen" system. But PS4, probably never.

Gliptitude, I'm not familiar with the Last Guardian, but I just noticed it's available for preorder for the PS3. Release date: Dec. 31.

I saw an article in the news that the PS4 sales are starting to slump. Usually I wait until the consoles go down in price before I purchase one. PS4 price seems to be holding steady though. I guess I'll wait for the next gen and see what it has to offer.
