Just controller projects at the moment. I have wanted to make my own Dark Tower overlay though.

Thank you very much for your design effort, 50tbrd. I really like the overall design. In futuristic games I like futuristic designs with futuristic colours. The current blueish and green is not so much futuristic, so I'd prefer a different colouring. Perhaps even a colouring like the original arcade game could be used (top: blue, bottom: red). But that's just a minor issue and perhaps my opinion, only. ... There is definitely a departure from the original spirit of the Vectrex homebrew. Nothing is made at cost anymore or for minimum wage/labor (like Sean, John and Madtronics did/do) and very few people donate their time and designs for the community. Hmm, I think this is not quite true or perhaps I didn't quite understand your above statement: Yes, various people emerged and try to make **some** money from things like overlays, controllers, or multicarts that they sell. And some of these people forget to ask the original author/designer for permission, which should not happen. Yet, there's still quite a number of game developers, designers, and others who spend their time and effort to make things for free, which is much appreciated. And this number has increased significantly in the past two years. For example think of the many free games that had been released in the recent past. So I see this much more positive and don't really see much of a change - rather the opposite. O.k., now back to topic - just didn't want to leave this uncommented.

To answer the original question, I designed a Protector overlay from scratch (I had never seen VeCaves). When Ed of vectrexoverlays was making repros, I sent my design to him, and suggested improvements and said to go ahead and redesign it.
My design had a red main area with a smooth gradient into green mountains at the bottom - because I wanted green mountains. I had the score area blue and the center of the radar different from the sides.
My suggestions were that to be most arcade faithful, the mountains should probably be red and the main area green (the landers are green). My criticism of my work being that if the red isn't printed dark and rich enough, the bright vectors turn it pink and that is not desired.
He remade it to what is shown in the first post, and I bought that when it was available.

Mike, I've been thinking a lot about revisiting this. I think I'd like to incorporate more from your original design (fewer colors) and add some arcade style artwork in the border.

More overlay options are great for this most-loved game! Here is my latest homemade overlay by Tony Holcomb. I got my green lander area and red mountains to closer match Defender. linkpic picture

Very nice ! Btw have you seen the yasi/protector sold on ebay UK with an overlay ? About 130 euros (170 usd) whereas the cart was only 9 euros (12 usd) by John's. That's mad !

This is a preview of The Protector 3.0 overlay. I'm currently working on color schemes and making it a polished piece. Mike's (iesposta) design was the inspiration that started it all and I wanted to give him a design which was closer to what he invisioned with my added touches. I really want Protector 3.0 to be good enough to be screen printed.
