Several Sega games are available on multiple platforms (I assume; for iOS at least):
Space Harrier II Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master Gunstar Heroes Golden Axe 3 Golden Axe 2 Golden Axe Crazy Taxi Ecco the Dolphin After Burner Climax Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Sonic Spinball Sonic CD
I was just wondering how these translated to current tablets and all. A few of them are free.
I'm also curious about Zaxxon Escape, if that was butchered or if it's good, or somewhere in between.

Good question. I've never played any of those games on mobile platforms, but I assume the graphics and sound would be emulated pretty well. I couldn't vouch for the controls, though. Once, my friend once let me try out Mega Man 2 on his iPhone, but I couldn't get used to the touchscreen controls; I need to feel the buttons under my fingers. Otherwise, if I were to hook up a USB gamepad to the tablet, I don't think I'd be able to see any difference in the emulation. And Golden Axe 3 wasn't officially released in North America for the Genesis, so this might be a good time to play it.

Zaxxon Escape is a waste of time. They've taken the formula from Temple Run and used it to make a game called Zaxxon that has no relation to the original game.
I have the Sonic games and they play well, so I'd be comfortable recommending them.

Yeah, with the download of Sonic 4 Episode II Lite, you get a promo for these games, several of which get very high marks. This one didn't have any at all, making me wonder what the deal was. Also, this might be something of interest for sj as well, for his Kindle or whatever he got recently.

but I couldn't get used to the touchscreen controls That's the problem with r-type. I'm getting so engrossed my pointing digit wanders all over the screen and obscures the rocket/missile/enemy/whatever that comes in from the left. Does anyone remember playing the original r-type on the Master System? Somewhere there was a hidden screen you could drop into. I can't remember where it was. I wonder if it's been incorporated into the Kindle version?

I wonder if it's been incorporated into the Kindle version? I've never played the Master System version, but I do have Super R-Type for the SNES. I can imagine that any of those scrolling shooter games would be hard to enjoy on a touchscreen; usually, there's so much happening at once that the slightest distraction, like a finger swiping across the screen, will lead to death. The Nintendo DS gets around this problem by using two screens: players move the stylus around the bottom screen while the action takes place on the top one. (There are some exceptions.) On a tablet or iPad, everything is done on one larger screen, so one's stylus or finger actually impedes on the viewing angle. I'm bad enough at R-Type as it is.

With reference to the hidden stage - I asked Mr. Google. Level 4, top of screen, reverse into gap. It doesn't work on the Kindle. Level 4 is where I'm currently stuck. I can't get passed the boss at the end. My finger is going so mad at that point it's like I'm trying to write some high octane Chinese calligraphy. Now if I could plug in a joystick...
