Of course, everyone's going to have a different opinion on things. Not everyone agrees on the same thing, like if your opinion doesn't mesh with popular thought, like a game series that everyone liked except for you or a game that pretty much everyone hated except for you. The first Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Genesis was the only one I really liked, for instance. I've seen many threads on the internet with people saying "I just got my first Genesis and need some games to be recommended for it", and many would reply to get all of the Sonics. I rented Sonic 2, 3 and Sonic and Knuckles (if I remember correctly) and never felt the need to get any of the others. And Sonic for the Sega CD was also disappointing, supposedly having over 40 (or did they say 70?) levels, yet it was just the same number of levels for most Sonics (18 or whatever), just made slightly different when you go into the Past or Future versions of them. The game was uneven, like with the Wacky Workbench levels (I think they were called) being a severe pain in the ass with those blasted things that bounced you way higher than you wanted to to try to get further in the game, and the second to the last area (where it looks like you're inside a giant saxophone or something) that was kind of a rehash of the second to the last area of the original Sonic was confusing and difficult to get around. Also back in the day, Star Wars Arcade for the 32X didn't get good reviews; I only saw one decent one in a magazine once, but I still HAD to get the game anyway After a few levels of shooting down T. I. E. Fighters, you're over the Death Star, which has so much slowdown and it's hard to see what's going on I couldn't get far with that at all. So you're just going over the first few levels over and over again, which gets boring. Yet nowadays I always see the game being recommended. Seems like time has been more kind to the game than when it was new. So anyway, what are some of yours?

I always liked the Mirco Machines titles for the Nes, N64 and Snes. The Koei titles for Nes were always pretty in depth games and I wasted a lot of time playing those.
Surprisingly most of the Disney games for the Sega Genesis and Super Nes are actually pretty good quality titles.

Aladdin kicked butt, didn't it? I wanted to play that one.

I always thought Aladdin was really good. It's one of those few games that seems to be better on the Genesis then the Snes.

I love the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man. Yes, it's one of the most hated games on the platform but I enjoyed playing it when I was a kid. It's mostly for sentimental reasons though since I would compete against mom for the household high score.

I've always thought Pac-Man wasn't a bad game in itself, but since it's supposedly a port of the arcade game, then yeah, it sucks a bit. I still played it a bit as a kid too and don't have the heart to throw out my copy of it, even though I haven't touched it since the 80s.

Compared to K.C. Munckin for the Odyssey2 it seems bad but the 2600 version is still a good effort.

When I was in college Golden Eye was the game. One of my classmates even made a short film partially inspired by it (titled "Bonding" and brilliantly put together). But I was terrible at this game and have always hated it. I really kind of skipped that generation of video games and have never really had the desire to play N64.
One video game I can think of that I think I rate higher than the consensus does is GOONIES II for the NES. I like the game itself very much, but I also enjoy the curiosities of it. It has the Goonies theme from the movie, reinforcing the idea that this is the video game companion to that film. Yet the Fratellis have almost nothing to do with the adventure, nor Chunk and then suddenly there is a mermaid? Then that it's called Goonies TWO, I've heard explained that the video game is intended as a sequel to the movie, (rather than a sequel to the half-ass Goonies game with similar gameplay). Really weird game with an intriguing world to it IMO.

Sounds odd indeed! A mermaid?!

Thanks for the info on GOONIES II gliptude!! I have thought several times to myself I will set down and try it out but I always put in some other game like Indy Heat or Gyruss. Just something to get a quick gaming buzz.
I like the N64 because to me it is the last home cart based system to be sold in retail stores. Plus the weight of the carts remind me of the Neo Geo without the cost.
Having played quite a few games for the N64 I agree on skipping the system. I am not a Zelda fan and feel I am too old to start now. But the Cruis 'In series, Madden, Mario Kart, Road Rash and Diddy Kong Racing are worth the price of admission. Best of all the Star Wars games.
For every good N64 cart you have a few stinkers and there were only about 300 titles released in the States.

And I've definitely played far worse games than Pac-Man and ET on the 2600...

Thanks for the info on GOONIES II gliptude!! I have thought several times to myself I will set down and try it out but I always put in some other game like Indy Heat or Gyruss. Just something to get a quick gaming buzz. Yes it is definitely worth a shot if you are playing the NES. I had it emulated on a GBA flash cart in the past, and I believe I eventually beat it. I think I cheated at least a little bit towards the end (maps and walk-throughs). It's not a quick game buzz though, more the kind of game you will play exclusively for a week until you beat it. If you don't have tons of time or if you're not a huge questing game person, you might look up the maps online to guide you and eliminate some of the guessing. ... I'd rank it in the top 10 NES games, (along with Marble Madness, Bionic Commando, Super Mario Bros 2, Zelda, RBI Baseball 3, Contra, Punch Out, Excite Bike and Metroid ... Gunsmoke and Kid Icarus are up there too.) RBI Baseball 3 is probably another game that my opinion strays from the norm on. Way more fun than today's super baseball simulators. Intuitive controls. Ridiculous ability to steal bases. 1990 stats, when my Cincinnati Redlegs won the series. Super fun 2 player game. I watched a friend play StarFox on the N64 a couple weeks ago, and must admit I was eventually impressed. However it was no fun at all when I tried to play it. The controllers for that system are ridiculous and I find the graphics generally difficult to look at. It's kind of one of those things like when you just can't comprehend the music that kids are listening to. I'm fine with prior and subsequent generations of video games though.

Ahh Gunsmoke. It takes place in Hicksville. Which there is a Hicksville, New York and Hicksville, Ohio.
High praise indeed with a top 10 Nes list like yours gliptitude. I love Sid M's Pirates for all versions: Nes, Genesis, C64, XBox, Wii, PSP. So I do have the patience and sometimes I do get free time. Sounds like I need to jump off the fence and check GOONIES II out. I have heard a lot of rumblings about a new version of Kid Icarus. It is hard sometimes to keep up with all the latest when you haven't played some of the old.
I have the first RBI Baseball but picked it up mostly because it is a Tengen title.
I can't stand these new baseball games either. I still play Tony LaRussa for the Sega Genesis.
In the Northern part of Ohio and Indiana we only got Chicago Cubs and White Sox games on tv at least until cable came along and then TBS with the Atlanta Braves.
I have never tried StarFox but it does look impressive from what I have seen.
I really need to find more about the GBA flash cart.
Thanks again gliptitude.

This is a bit ironically funny now... The first Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Genesis was the only one I really liked, for instance. I rented Sonic 2, 3 and Sonic and Knuckles (if I remember correctly) and never felt the need to get any of the others. A friend of mine contacted me last week to see if I wanted Sonic 3 for free. As I checked my records (I wrote reviews on all games I played for the Genesis, 32X and the CD player), as it turned out, I never played 3! He said it went out on Saturday so I'll be checking my box soon. If I feel about it how I feel about the other Sonic games (i. e. it's not a "must have") then I'll put it up for free on here to give away. Have to see how I feel about it first though

I really like Sonic 3D Blast. It is similar to the old Sega arcade game Flicky.
The bright spot about the Sonic series is that it's the gold standard that all platform games on the Genesis had to compete against. When they released Sonic and Knuckles it allowed you to play Sonic 2 & 3 with the pass thru technology. I thought that really helped breath new life into those two games. If nothing else it looked cool sticky out of the cart port of the Genesis. Try that Super Nes.
Now if you take a look at the TG-16. It came with Kieth Courage which is awful but soon Bonk followed which IMHO is probably one of the best platformers for any system.
