Vectrex Console as a Meditation Device My Philosophy
When playing on my Vectrex, the iridescence glow, the light trails, the depth of the graphics coupled with the sound chip the vectors give a hyper-real Experience which for me opens up an inner portal to another time and space. It’s another state of mind allowing access to cherished feelings of my childhood when I would enter into an arcade during the late 70's and early 80's. These were feelings of safety, contentment, excitement and above all FUN, providing groundbreaking experiences and new states of mind every time I visited the arcades a.k.a. Amusement Centers. Especially exciting were the vector XY Games such as Asteroids, Battle Zone, Space Duel & Tempest to mention but a few, these games always appeared more futuristic than the raster pixel games.
I think that XY vector graphics perhaps due to having very little pictorial information, no pixel allows for more imagination this seems to make it more real, offering an immersive state of complete connection, taking the player out of linear time and encouraging the gamer to abandon left brain logical thinking activity thus achieving a more tactile engagement with the machine. All this coupled with a phosphoric iridescence glow hypnotizes the player and suddenly you find yourself in the game. I do get this feeling from some of the raster pixel arcade machine games but it’s just not as complete as the vector graphics games.
In the Hindu and Buddhist traditions there can be found an ancient meditation device known as a Yantra these consist of symmetrical overlaid vector line drawings. The outer area is called Ojas and the inner center point is a static dot known as Bindu. The recipient focuses on the center dot to slow down time and ultimately stop the optical effect of Ojas appearing to move. This brings an overall calming effect which allows access to the inner spiritual mind for focus and balance, perhaps something similar to the brainwave frequency change found in the Alpha state, the same as found during sleep and meditation. Some Vectrex games such as Web Warp (when moving through the square portal) and Star Ship (when traveling through the black hole) feature Yantra-like Patterns which produce a similar effect regarding their optical and meditative qualities.
This is the traditional transcendental landscape where the person relaxes the mind to access timeless, thoughtless alpha states, perhaps only until interrupted by a thought alone like “I'm doing good” and suddenly your not.
The most well known of these Yantra’s is Shree Yantra.
