I get that the vectrex 3d imagers can be expensive on e-bay because they are so rare...but what is the normal going rate stand alone, without box, no games?
I'm in the market and just don't want to get taken.

A decent condition Imager, loose, no games? Probably $250-300 I'd say at minimum.

well that is more reasonable - that's about $100 US. Its a hard call, I'm a collector but also a player. It would be nice to have the original real deal but the cost is hard to justify..
I'll have to check out some reviews! How is the 3D gameplay in general?

These days I'm more of a player than a collector so I went with the Madronix 3D imager. It works well.
There aren't many 3D games. I've only found myself replaying 3D Mine Storm and 3D Narrow Escape. $100 is worth it for me to experience the 3D and replay those 2 games every once in a while.

I'd recommend buy a repro Imager, not just because it is a good quality piece and not just for the games that are currently available to play but because the is interest in homebrew games for the future. Not only are developers interested in it for the 3D effect but also for its ability to color graphics.

After watching some youtube videos and listening to your suggestions I've decided to move forward with the imager, filled out the forum to get a quote.
It looked to me in the review the original was really shotty and I'd be too afraid of breaking it after spending a god awful amount of money on it. It would just sit in a display case forever and would be a good conversational piece. Maybe I should seek out a broken one just to have it...
Anyway - now I just have to wait for Richard to make more vecflash carts!

Wow those are really cheap! I'm a big fan of everdrive carts - so I'm looking for the closest cart that works similar for the vec. I kinda wanted an all in one deal and one that is easy to load games on (future proofing for homebrews coming out). I guess it depends on when Richard will start selling his again and at what price is..
these seem to be really good and a cheap alternative - the downfall really becomes having to flash them in an epprom writer. When an SD card is essentially plug and play.

The only downsides I can see is that they are limited to 32k (so no bankswitching games) and can't handle the additional RAM games (a few). But that only excludes about 5% of games currently.

I've been developing my bullet hell style game using bankswitching on Harvey's 64K programmable board (he added support for them later when it was explained to him how to do this - It's probably later in the thread) so I can confirm they definitely work. vectorgaming.proboards.com/thread/1202/untitled-bullet-game-wip

I'll have to check out some reviews! How is the 3D gameplay in general? I use the madtronix model. In a first moment, the more impressive thing is the "real" colors... The performance is great, with several advantages: - People with big nose can play - Comfortable and light - Eye holes bigger than original Like weak point, disks aren´t isolated into a box, so the system is a bit more "delicate" in this way (you have to keep a good position to leave it in the table) For me, the only experience to play Narrow Escape is worthy of spending (specially if you played the Narrow Escape 2D version before...) Could be good see more 3D games, it is a waiting land.

In a first moment, the more impressive thing is the "real" colors... This is also my first impression and also the most lasting one for me. THE COLORIZATION IS REALLY FANTASTIC! .. I think the color aspect of it is pretty special. It is BETTER than any dedicated color vector monitor that i have seen because you still have the perfect smooth vectors. There is not the trade off of pixelation that you see on Tempest, Space Duel or Star Wars, (those are the only color cabs i've seen in person). It is only a little bit annoying to wear the headset and perhaps a deterent to developers since most players don't have one. The 3D effect is interesting but imperfect and eventually just a novelty. BUT THE COLOR IS FLAWLESS AND A REALLY SUBSTANTIAL ENHANCEMENT OF THE VECTREX'S CAPABILITIES. I would love to see new games that supported the 3D Imager JUST FOR THE COLORS.
