For me it'd be the Atari 2600. It was amazing what a crapload of stuff came out for it, especially since it was hard to program for. People still doing things for it nowadays is especially nuts! Other favorites include the Sega Genesis and the Vectrex, of course Also the ColecoVision, but I don't have one of those just yet though, I always enjoyed playing it at a friend's.

Hi, nice to post in here that early Indeed Pretty cool units, hadn't seen those before, although like you said with one it was primarily sold in the UK, so I naturally wouldn't be familiar with it (as I live in the U. S.) unless I was a near-Pong expert (probably). That carrying case for that one is really spiffy! We had a Magnavox tv with six built-in Pong games where you just pressed a button and it would switch to the games (no having to change the channel to 2 or 3 back then to play most games). That one wasn't bad, but everything was two player only though. How many other Museum websites do you have?

2600 for me too. I play mine and I'm instantly 13 again.

Just to clarify. My favorite system is the Vectrex. My 2600 is a close second.

Unfortunately I am going to break the bubble. I love the 2600, don't get me wrong, but my top 5 classic systems in no particular order are: Commodore 64, Vectrex, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and NES. I might stick PS1 and 2 in there, if they are considered 'classic'.
I'm sorry, I just don't have the childhood memories to love the 2600 above all else. It's one of my more-played platforms, but most of the best game have better C64 ports anyway. I feel dirty hating on the 2600...it's in my top 10!!!

Unfortunately I am going to break the bubble. It doesn't matter: Vectrex purists might want to hang me for having these forums and founding the Vectrex wiki, yet it's not my number one console. Part of my judgment comes from what came out for a system originally; the 2600 and Genesis had tons of games and accessories, the Vectrex hardly had anything at all, hence why it's currently my #3 favorite system. It's a good one to have now since there's literally 100 games for it nowadays. But back in the day when there weren't even 35 games, several suffered from slowdown and weren't very good (in my opinion) if you didn't have two players (Rip Off)? #1 from me for those reasons? Nah... but my top 5 classic systems in no particular order are: Commodore 64, Vectrex, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and NES. I'd say more along the lines of "breaking the bubble" would be including the Sega CD. That's an odd choice for a top 5, in my opinion. I'd say it's fairly good but not great. I haven't played that many games for it though, come to think of it...not even 20. The Genesis and 2600 I have though...dozens each! I might stick PS1 and 2 in there, if they are considered 'classic'. Yeah it's kind of iffy putting the latter in a "classic" list; not sure if it's old enough to be "classic" yet. But since it's backwards compatible with the PS1 it definitely has a huge enough library to be considered a favorite. I feel dirty hating on the 2600...it's in my top 10!!! I don't think having the 2600 in a top 10 list is "hating"

Surely the Vectrex has to be no.1 due to it's unique character. It doesn't matter there weren't too many original titles - it was a mini arcade machine for God sakes! Most importantly it doesn't rely on a tele to function - unlike virtually every other home console system since. (Only the Virtual Boy springs to mind, and that's almost a hand-held.) Go Vectrex.

Yeah the Vectrex wins hands down due to being unique. It's not the only factor to look for but that definitely does give it an edge though.

I agree about the Vectrex but I also agree the inital batch of games might have turned some folks off to so few games. Glad now that the homebrew scene is going strong.
The Sega CD seems to be going really strong now that more people are buying blanks and downloading iso's. I can't condone it but it is one way to try games that you may never have been able to afford. When it's in the Seag CD who knows if it's a real disc or copy.
Some of the other systems are hard to beat when the game titles run in the hundreds. I know Atari had several hundred games but so did Nintendo and most arcade remakes are better. For example Burgertime, Donkey Kong, Gyruss, Elevator Action, Pac-Man and Popeye. Now the bad Super Pitfall doesn't hold a candle to the 2600 versions of Pitfall and Pitfall 2.
The C64 has in my opinion better versions of Donkey Kong, Mission Impossible and Spy Hunter then the Nes.
For me I have discovered so many different systems it's hard to pick a favorite. The Sega Genesis holds a strong spot because it had so many options like the Sega Master System adaptor, the Sega CD, the 32X adaptor and over a thousand titles when you add those things together. It could al be played with the power of the Genesis plu you got a huge energy bill! What could be better?
I know growing up in the 1970's and 80's it was all about what games and systems you owned. I had one friend who his dad owned several NAPA auto stores and he had the O2, 2600, C64 and every game imaginable for that time. When I started working the Nes, SMS and TG-16 were slugging it out. So those were the systems I focused on.
