I've used an x-acto with a nice, new, sharp blade. One cut down, one across. Worked well for me.

I'll try it and let you know with my remaining fingers.

I just sharpen my EDC (an HK Ally knife) and then make four cuts Two of then on the side, into the corner down to the depth of the corner of the 9-pin hard plastic. Then two mode from end with the blade nest to the 9-pin corner and slice down the length until I reach the previous cut made on the side. No problems so far getting the right shape.
But if I had,,, then I would have used either,,, the flat of a belt sander,,, or a Dremel tool.

I forget where I got this cable from but I feel like there is no way cutting it with a blade would work, it doesn't give at all when I try to press a box cutter through it or saw on it. I'll get the dremel out and bring it to my space in the city where I can let the smell of burning plastic dissipate in the 5 days I won't be there after tomorrow.

you know what ended up working best? A rasp file, gripped in left hand tight and worked the plug at an angle for 30 seconds or so, done. I can clean it up later with a finer file/sand paper if I want now but it at least fits ... it doesn't actually look that bad without finish sanding: I bet a finer file would take twice as long but look nicer still.

seems mountaingoat is long gone now but hope someone else knows what are the test points to see the square wave/trigger pattern in the first post?
I tried using ground + pin4 wire as it comes out of the cable but no matter what light I shine or don't shine on the phototransistor the voltage doesn't change. if I remove the photo transistor from the circuit and shine light on it while testing resistance it changes so I know that part works, I've checked the wiring and continuity numerous times, I see voltage at the IC, at the photo transistor, across the filter cap, replaced the IC just in case ... I can't get this thing working. Any troubleshooting tips appreciated.
