Why was pinball illegal in those cities? .. Seems like those were/are more progressive places than most of the country. Was pinball banned in smaller communities? Who played pinball? .. Wasn't one of the bigger pinball manufacturers based in Chicago?

Pinball was considered gambling, which is still illegal in a lot of states to this day.
It took someone to bring a pinball machine into a New York courtroom in the late 70s to demonstrate pinball was a game of skill and not necessarily luck in order to finally lift the ban/law on them.

Oh okay. .. New York city has Off Track Betting (OTB) for horse racing in small store fronts around town, which you would think was positively gambling. But maybe those didn't exist back then. .. Also now that i think of it the only OTB spots i can specifically recall were in Brooklyn, which is a different municipality.

^Right, there's technicalities to get out of those, like with whatever genius it was who initially figured out you could get away with a gambling business if it was on a boat, since (I assume) most of the anti-gambling laws state you can't have a business grounds or something. When my grandparents were alive, crossing a bridge through Alexandria, Louisiana used to not be a big affair. The last time we went there, that waterway at the main bridge (whatever body of water runs through the town) was all lit up from gambling places out the wazoo right on the shore. Aside from the lights, it was kind of depressing, actually.

Yeh, large scale gambling is pretty gross in my view. I only witnessed casinos for the first time a couple years ago. I was astounded to see that 90% of the floor space was occupied by slot machines, and that that's the way most casinos are. Quite a morbid scene.
