Wow, first Todd Rodgers, now him: Billy's Donkey Kong world record has been rendered invalid after a few decades. StoryWhen watching The King of Kong documentary, you might've caught near the end where he never played against fellow Donkey Kong expert Steve Wiebe (sp?). That should've happened, and probably never will. Crazy, yet sad stuff. All over a freakin' GAME, for God's sakes.

Yep, saw this earlier. I guess he won't be attending FreePlay Florida this year.

Yeah, my local expo had him and Walter Day as guest panelists the other year. Makes me wonder if that'll kill any future appearances, along with their friendship.

His call to fame were the high scores, with those removed I'm not sure he has a reason to go other than play games. It's a sad state of affairs. I've met him and talked to him many times and he is a nice enough guy.

I'd say the public persona that is Billy Mitchell far eclipses any fame he would've had on the merit of his high scores alone. With Billy, it's more about the legend and the mystique rather than his gaming credentials. He could never play another game of Donkey Kong as long as he lives and he'll still be Billy Mitchell. Whether or not he goes to any upcoming conventions will depend on his tolerance for public humiliation. He is a proven cheater; he spent decades touting the virtues of fair play and competition and it turns out he disgraced the whole process of world record-keeping by interfering with the sanctity of the validation procedure. I wouldn't be eager to return to public scrutiny if I were him.

No, it is getting old indeed.

Sad. Interesting though, I'll admit.
Billy just needs to play the game live with witnesses. That's is all there is to it.

I remember watching King of Kong when it came out and my wife turned to me and let me know she thought Billy was an "icky" person and most likely cheated to get his latest high score. As with most things, she was right. Like it or not Billy is a big part of gaming history and became so by playing the villain from the very start. The guy you love to hate. His denouement is not really as much a stain on the Twin Galaxies history as it is an affirmation that gaming culture is a real thing and has been for a very long time.

Things just got sadder: Mitchell has sued Twin Galaxies and is taking them to court, alleging defamation when they retracted his record. And so did Guinness. (Is he going to sue Guinness too?)
How much a falling out he had with T. Galaxies. Wonder what he and Walter Day think of each other now.

Maybe it's a scheme by both of them to stay relevent and in the news.
Twin Galaxies was a great idea for it's time, but managing the millions of possible high scores with user submitted videos is impractical.
Maybe they should rely on sanctioned live events only, like they do for chess or Rubics cube events for example.

I remember reading that Billy was going to play the game live again to prove that he could achieve the score. I don't know if it did happen, though.

^My guess is he'd have to do that if it goes to court. After all, that's why pinball is now legal in New York, the guy brought in a pinball game to court to show it actually involves some skill, and not just luck, as they viewed it as to being an illegal gambling device for years back then.

Ha, can you imagine if they have him do that in court?!
