Thank you, 8-Bit Waves, for listening to people and providing a new version with ramping up difficulty. I'll try the new version out on the weekend and will then post, again.

Thank you, 8-Bit Waves , for listening to people and providing a new version with ramping up difficulty. I'll try the new version out on the weekend and will then post, again. No problem. Thank you for your feedback. Make sure you download the latest file when you try it. I'm still tweaking it in my spare time. I'll probably post a link to the final (or closer to it) to other groups on Play Your Vectrex day... assuming you all don't have any issues with it.

I've just downloaded the new version of Beluga Dreams and played it for a while. My Highscore was 17. The changes you've made (diffuculty, background with moon, stars, and cloud) really add much to the game. Also, the game is much more playable and I reached the first modifiers which are a good idea and good fun. Right after that I played Veccy Bird for a short while and I remembered what a friend told me many years ago: You can play squash or tennis but technique is very different and you cannot get very good in both squash and tennis. Below please find various minor suggestions/ideas. Please note that the game has a good level, now. The only thing that should be really changed is the rectangular shape of the obstacles (first item below). • Shape of obstaclesWith the moon, stars, and big star as background the graphics in the game have improved a lot. Currently, the simple square graphics of the obstacles (blocks) stand out in a negative way. Suggestion: For the obstacles a different shape should be found. I wonder whether the obstacles could have cloud shape - just like the current cloud in the background, now. So Beluga flies and tries to avoid hitting the clouds. The current background cloud could become something else or you just remove it completey. Note: Collision detection could remain a simple square - clouds are soft and therefore it's quite o.k. if you can hit parts of it without crashing. • Racing CloudCurrently, the cloud in the background looks nice but it's a bit fast and at first I had the impression that the cloud was the first obstacle to avoid. Suggestions: Make cloud slower. Perhaps a bit faster than the moon. • Scoring when passingCurrently, score is increased whenever an obstacle moves off screen. This is a bit irritating (perhaps I'm influenced/biased by Veccy Bird, here). Suggestion: Scoring should happen right after you passed an obstacle. • Cloud shapeCurrently, shape of cloud is always the same. Suggestion: Have clouds with different shapes (perhaps even random generated) PS: Thank you for your mentioning me in the game, 8-Bit Waves.

Shape of obstacles - I'll probably be sticking with rectangles unless I can think of something I like that is a low line count. I think of them as non dream elements that take you out of the dream anyway. Dream portal... reality object... etc. I'll continue to think about it. Cloud racing/shape - I made it faster because it is supposed to be a foreground graphic . I tried to make it fade in and out to show it wasn't an obstacle. I will most likely add another cloud shape. Scoring when passing - I've been thinking about obstacle clearing vs edge of the screen scoring. I'll probably go with what you suggested. Veccy Bird is a very different game. I was definitely not trying to emulate that play style. Veccy Bird is also way harder in my opinion.

Thank you for your reply, 8-Bit Waves. Just a quick note: Shape of obstacles - I'll probably be sticking with rectangles unless I can think of something I like that is a low line count. I think of them as non dream elements that take you out of the dream anyway. Dream portal... reality object... etc. I'll continue to think about it. ... The good thing about cloud graphic is that they always look good even even if lines aren't drawn in the 100% correct way. Perhaps this aspect can be used to optimize drawing.

I got a chance to try this out today. I was very impressed. A very nice game.
I'm glad that the modifiers mix things up and you can avoid them if you'd like to make things easier. I would like to see them as multipliers instead. Have the risk also garner a reward. One modifier doubles the points, two triples, three quadruples.
I love the stars and clouds in background. They really make it seem like it is a dream. I do think the rectangles are out of place. They don't really fit the theme. I'd like to see them be fish, birds or planes, maybe whirlwinds, waves, sea urchins, sea weed. Anything that's recognizable.

I've been intrigued by your avatar throughout the Vector War IX 8-Bit Waves and glad I just found this post by stalking VECTREXER 's activity feed (shhh, trying to find the best stuff fast). Just played this on my Vectrex and got 22, and then 42. My daughter woke up to a fun surprise ... I said, "I stayed up all night coding a new game!" She looked at me like, nahhh you didn't. I like that the physics are different from Veccy Bird, and not quite and terrible as Flappy Bird; it seems just about right. I think the randomized playing field makes getting to various levels between players not quite the same. The power ups might be a little extreme for the first part of the course... maybe make them increase in intensity every 10 or 20 levels? Regardless, we'll be playing it and seeing how high we can get! Is there an ending programmed in?

It is endless as of now. If I make an "ending" I'll still probably allow people to continue past it. I was sad when I beat Veccy Bird because I wanted more. Once you all figure it out, you'll be going hundreds deep (especially your son ) in it so I hesitate to make it easier. I am open to it though.

it looks great but I don't like flappy games too much Thanks, gauze. This was supposed to be a little weekend break from the other things I'm working on but it sort of kept growing. At least one of those other games will appeal to you I hope.

Agreed! The opening/credit screen gives you good feels. A slow and fluid animation there would be S U P R E M E!
