Ouhh, I was wrong. I answered you in March 2023 already by mail.
I send you this mail again yesterday, with some new text, hope the "hs-pforzheim" e-mail is still valid? Or shall I resend it to the mail address that you have here in your profile?
In the answer not only Bedlam was a topic, but also Hyperchase. But here what I found out about Bedlam:
Original cartridge version and your patched 30Hz version: The game never shows 7 lifes left. Only 6 or 8 lifes. If you have 6 lifes and get another extra life, it displays 8 lifes instead of 7. And if you have 7 lifes (it shows 8) and you loose a life, it jumps back to 6 lifes. Seems never somebody saw this bug?!
Original cartridge:
- If you have 8 or more lifes, slow downs occur in the rotating levels (at least in level 4, 5 and 6, it's difficult to check, if this also happens also in level 3, because it's difficult to collect up to 8 lifes already until level 3.)
- Beside the slow downs, 1) Sometimes the fire button does not react for single shots, 2) Sometimes shots are going through an enemy without killing him. 3) ZAP function does not kill all enemies on the screen.
- Loosing a life reduces the issues, latest if you are back on 6 lifes, the game is working normal again.
Your patched 30Hz verison:
- Everything seems to work fine, due to changing the interrupt things as you described, there are no slow downs anymore, and ZAP seems always working well. Game runs "smooth" and well.
- One or two times, I had the feeling, after killing the last enemy on the screen, the game took a quarter of a second, to realize, that the level ended, before it continued to the next level. Maybe in context of the enemies that or not destroyable. But I'm not sure, maybe I'm wrong. And even if this is happending, due to the changed game code, it is no issue and no problem to fix, the game is working well. (Even if I missed maybe something after playing 4 or 5 times, I think you can publish the Bedlam fixed version on your website in your Bedlam article.)
LOL yeah, if everybody had a Flashcart, we could take the 50Hz version for the tournament. But I think a lot of people wouldn't be happy. I also would prefer the normal speed / 30Hz version.
