Have you ever seen an in-game (consumer) LEVEL EDITOR that you really enjoyed using? If not, can you imagine one existing? Anybody have any ideas for this? Most that I have messed around with were a fun novelty, but pretty quickly lost my interest. Maybe I'm too lazy to enjoy them though. Bangai-O for the DS has a crazy level editor feature, which enables you to save and share levels by CONVERTING THEM INTO AN AUDIO FILE, kind of like the sounds produced by a telephone modem. (To transmit or receive the level you actually hold the DS mic next to a speaker playing the audio!). ... But as cool as this audio save system is, the game itself is pretty lame in my opinion. ... Some Vectrex games like Scramble and Gravitrex would seem like great candidates for a level editor feature. I'm not sure how practical such a feature would be on Vectrex though?

I've only seen level editors in homebrew game releases. I myself am not very interested in using this kind of feature, though. It just feels more like a hassle to me. I rather just enjoy the game.

What homebrew releases have level editors? BTW, one of the best known level editors is that of Excite Bike (NES). The only others I can think of off the top of my head are those included in a couple versions of Advance Wars (GBA and DS). I concur with you that playing those games is generally much more fun than "designing levels", but still it interests me...

I'm sure there's a ton out there. There's several for Doom.

I know that, for the Jaguar, Impulse X on CD has a level editor.

There is a level editor in the PS3 game Gravity Crash, too (IIRC).
