Thanks... likewise nice to be back. I was having a time off from work... found this new MAME feature and suddenly I got the "gaming bug" again.

The lowres FRAPS screenshots don't do 'em justice. Of course it's not the same as the real thing but I guess this is the closest you can get on a normal monitor.
There's plenty of HLSL settings too... haven't had time to play with them too much yet.
PS: If you need MAME and ROM sets, just ask. There's a torrent of full set available.

HLSL is a neat feature... you can use it on the raster games too... to imitate a vintage monitor display.

Of course it's not the same as the real thing but I guess this is the closest you can get on a normal monitor. The same was done with a Vectrex emulator, what with adding the trails. Also not the same, but still cool though.

What am I missing here? I downloaded this emulator, fired up Asteroids and it doesn't look any different from any other MAME emulator I already have.

I assume you have to check on certain settings to make sure the glow is applied.

I assume you have to check on certain settings to make sure the glow is applied. Hopefully someone familiar with the emulator can post what those settings are. I don't seen anything in the options menu that would be of help.

Do you use MAMEUIFX? You should as that one supports the high score saving and also many other features. Right click over the game, define the "vector options" and check HLSL. If that box doesn't show, restore default options on MAMEUIFX. Then it saves a file vector.ini to the \ini folder. You can either adjust the values from the .ini file with a text editor... or ingame with "slider options".

I did that but for some reason Asteroids had the HLSL checkbox cleared.
So, now that it's working...I'm not blown away by it. In the example of Asteroids, it still pales in comparison to the arcade game. The bullets in the arcade game are vibrant and it's still something that this version cannot emulate. It's an improvement nonetheless.
Now the problem I am having is that the emulator is non-responsive and I have to initiate task manager to end the program.

Yes... AAE used to "fake" those bigger shots in a neat way.
People have to be realistic... the genuine vector display can never be duplicated 100% on a raster monitor. But if you look at Star Wars and compare it to the old MAME presentation you're bound to see the HUGE difference... at least it's a big step to correct direction.
PS: There is a LOT of slider settings for the glow effect. Play with them and share if you find better ones. I increased the vector beam width. Open the file vector.ini (or press TAB button ingame) to view the settings.
