Since I'm using my second pad now for apps, I just thought I'd see what others use.
Obviously my mom had gotten an iPad like a year and a half ago or something. That bit the dust back in October. She since got another one, a cheap Droid compatible (awaits for Trek to chime in) for only $99 (the size of an iPad mini) called the Nextbook, I think. Bit of a piece of junk there, as the screen isn't very responsive, it does some weird things (the screen goes black after watching a YouTube video, for instance, and it's hard to figure out what to do next to continue browsing on there or some other site), the battery doesn't last very long and the sound is crap. I figured you probably couldn't get a very decent pad for at least twice as much, which mom had just found where Best Buy recommends some $250 pad of some sort, so it seemed I was right there (not that they necessarily have any credibility but I'd say that would be a starting point for those interested in trying out those types of devices).
Tonight I just got back Jewel Mania and The Pinball Arcade, so it's good to be playing those again.

Looks like your mom got a cheap (and I'm not referring to price) Android tablet there. She should have gotten a Nexus 7, which is a real tablet (as opposed to the garbage she got). Unfortunately, these very cheap tablets are awful most of the time and folks get them because of the "great" price. A Nexus 7 runs for $229 for a 16 GB model (https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_7_16GB_Black?id=nexus_7_16gb_2013). Heck, even one of the new Kindle tablets from Amazon would have been a better deal. What does she usually use the tablet for?
By the way, its Android, not Droid. Droid is a specific type of Android phone that is sold in Verizon.

Well, she just got something to get something real quick. Still gets her on the net and to play some Scrabble (to answer your question as to what she uses it for). Unfortunately, these very cheap tablets are awful most of the time and folks get them because of the "great" price. I forgot to mention it has some lag too. Probably pretty underpowered under the hood... By the way, its Android, not Droid. Droid is a specific type of Android phone that is sold in Verizon. Oh, thanks. But then, I meant to say "Dreck" anyway

Turned out it was the Nexus 7 mom was talking about that had the good reviews. She's going to check on one tomorrow, so maybe I should hold off on the Jewel Mania playing until then (I had made it to over level 100 before the iPad crashed and now I'm already up to level 24).

Cool. Make sure she gets the 2013 model (some sites are selling the 2012 model cheaper), as the internals are significantly better as is the screen (1080p on the 2013 model vs 720p on the 2012 model).

There's nothing we really need to get the newer over the old one for unless the 2012s have some kind of major issues (the internals you mentioned) that were cleared up with the 2013s.
BUT...mom's been reading about the Galaxy pads that are pretty neck and neck with Nexus 7 comparisons. Do you know about comparing the two?

I suggest she give them both a try at a place like Best Buy. The Galaxy Tabs have the added "skin" from Samsung and that tends to delay updates. They also tend to be more expensive than the Nexus 7. It all depends on what he she likes, so trying them out is the best thing.
I don't recommend getting the Nexus 7 from 2012 because it lacks a rear camera. Overall, performance is good (particularly with KitKat) but the price difference isn't worth getting this model over the 2013 version.

We could care less about the camera. What's KitKat?

Kit Kat is the latest version of Android (4.4).

She'll be looking tomorrow, so I'll let her know that's when the sale ends!
And ironically, she had just SAID today about a local Tiger Direct store that went out of business recently!
