When emulation was new, Jeff Minter was very active in alt.* newsgroups. He's a big Tempest fan.
Neil Bradley's EMU was the first one that emulated all vector games. I freaked out when I heard about it and immediately bought a new computer. Those were the days...

Yes, it was perfect. Only downside was that it didn't save the high scores.
Vector games came to MAME pretty soon after that. Except for Empire Strikes Back, which used some sort of different code. But Neil Bradley was the guy who was the first to emulate the Atari classics.
Just imagine how much money Atari lost because they didn't port these very popular games to home computers. They would have sold like hotcakes in the early nineties.
