Ouch. I don't have a link to it, since it was on Yahoo, which their news stories disappear pretty quickly, but I'm sure it's all over the place...
I think they lost over $400 million (U. S.), their first ever loss after being in business for several decades. Well, the latter part of that statement is pretty good, at least...
First off, though, in regards to any Wii detractors of "Wii sux! The graphics are outdated and its profits have been going down for the last few years!", etc., well, first off, its several years old. Also, Nintendo FINALLY did what the other two big companies (Sony, Microsoft) have been doing all along: lose money. That's right, MS spent $1 billion (U. S.) fixing their crappy-assed XBoxes the other year. And don't bother defending that either, with "well at least they did all that!", nope, they shouldn't have had to in the first place. And buying a console and having to spend $150 a year (or whatever it is) for an extended warranty? Ridiculous. And Sony had been losing money on their PS3s for a while too; might still be, I don't know.
Granted, I'm not a Nintendo fanboy as it is, as I don't have any of their products: the family has a Wii, not me, and I still need to get a GBA I have no plans on going back and getting anything before those consoles (I have more than enough going on as it is!). I agree they need to get stuff in gear (although the article did mention the 3DS' sales have climbed a bit recently) and not having a lot of their stuff being so family-friendly/kiddie-looking at times. I don't know how the Wii U next year is going to do. And of course it doesn't mean Nintendo is suddenly going to disappear either. I just don't want them to end up like Sega (no new consoles) or even Atari (hopefully not, as they still have a way to go before that happens).
Time will tell I guess...
