While playing my Vectrex with a multicart I started to get abnormal sounds and blockier looking Vector lines. I restarted my Vectrex after I removed the Multi cart and heard some strange tones. I am unable to get into Minestorm. I get stuck on the Player 1 Screen. It started happening while I was playing Protector. Any help would be much appreciated. vimeo.com/192738027

how confident are you regarding working on a vectrex (servicing etc?) my advice to start would be, powered off, to take the back cover off the vectrex and then check the various connections inside (the plugs etc) to make sure the connections are good, and, you should re-seat (take out and then put back in again) the sound chip (perhaps either the sound chip has a bad connection in the socket, or, the sound chip is faulty (a replacement sound chip is cheap dont worry))

I have opened and worked on other consoles. I'll try what you recommend tonight. Thanks for the suggestion and information.

Got a couple of ay-3-8912A's ordered. Found on Atariage that someone had used these with success in the Hong Kong console's. Since I'm going to open it up anyway might as well replace it with a new one. Any other chips that I should replace while I'm at it?

the ay-3-8912A variant of the ay-3-8912 will work just fine yep, no problems with using one of those i wouldnt worry about other chips for now but instead just check on the sound chip, check that the socket the sound chip is in is not too dirty or corroded as that might be causing the problem (bad/poor contact due to dirt or corrosion with the socket) also as mentioned check all the plugs/connectors inside the vectrex, make sure they are making good contact and nothing has come loose or is loose/wobbly.. make sure pins are clean also, as they have been known to corrode over time.. one of the youtube videos with the guy with a beard has that problem, poor contact with the pins of the main connector apart from that, maybe just give it a clean while u are in there, eg. if it is full of dust (use compressed air, or just use a soft brush to brush off all the dust, and give it a good blow that's what i do) could also have a little look for bad solder joints (eg. dry joints, cracked, etc) if your problem isnt resolved by changing/ensuring sound chip and socket are good, and the cables/plugs/pins/connectors etc all seem ok, then can proceed from there. let us know how u get on

I replaced the sound chip with the ay-3-8913A and Eureka! Everything is working! The sound is even better sounding than before. Thinking back now it did sound a bit off ever since I received it from the Netherlands. Thanks so much for the help mugsy and everyone else who contributed! You were spot on! im working on trying to get rid of that 'mugsy' name lol (i emailed admin) that's fantastic news that it is working again, the sound chip going funny does seem to be quite a common problem anyway, good work
