I recently watched the film Man vs. Snake. If you have not seen this documentary, I highly recommend it. It is a movie about one man trying to reclaim his original 'billion point' Nibbler score from the early 80s at Twin Galaxies arcade. A very fun watch, especially so recently after Billy Mitchell's collapse.
This film is also very motivational. As a former World Record holder, it got under my skin when our protagonist claimed, "that's MY record! Nibbler is MY game!".
So, I fired up Pole Position for the Vectrex. My personal best is 77,500 (former #1, now #3). The World Record is 77,650 (according to the old Vectrex leaderboards). I still haven't topped it, but I am well aware of what I have to do to best it.
Then, I remembered Rob Maerz and I got into a Star Castle duel in a Vector War years ago. I posted a couple games in the 30k range or so, but Rob got a couple pointers from some Star Castle arcade pros and pushed the score to over 100k, and eventually became the first person to ever score 1,000,000 points on Vectrex Star Castle. In the movie, the story focuses around Nibbler, a 'marathon' game - one where once you reach a certain level of skill in a game, you can go forever (or as long as your body can hold out).
So, I have started playing Star Castle competitively again. To be honest, my scores are not good, because I have swapped from joystick controls to button controls after playing some rounds on a real Star Castle cabinet.
And of course, the absolute HYPE in my brain on another Tutstronix title has Vectrexians and Vector Pilot in the mix. I was a little late on the Vector Patrol train, but my copy is in the mail!
I also catch myself thinking about Cosmic Chasm often. It is such a strange game that, once you understand what is going on, is honestly one of the more interesting games for the Vectrex.
Anyway, just wanted to say hello to some of you.
