Stay Room has a rather interesting concept. I would say "for a game" but that's a bit of a stretch (which I'll get to).
The theme to this one is horror/survival. You have to make it through the night at a haunted house.
So, is this like the original Doom or Doom II where you start off the game with a "crappy little pistol"? Maybe you're given a stick that'll keep a ghoul at bay one time during an attack, driving it away but your stick breaks? After that maybe you'll find a baseball bat that will last a while longer, or possibly a shotgun that's only hindered by finding ammo for it?
Uh, no. You have NO weapons whatsoever, for one thing.
Before a new game you're given either a character with no useful skills whatsoever or you'll get a random one WITH an actual attribute to them. Even though you have to watch a video ad for it I'd go with the latter.
Then once a game is started with five other computer-generated players, you have less than 30 seconds to find a room in the house, enter it and...crawl into its bed. Yeah, that's IT...unless you get a bit luckier. Once the 30 seconds are up some ghoul is let loose in the house. At least a crate is parachuted into your room (what the hell, is there no roof to this place?) that might have an actual weapon in it that can be used, such as an automated catapult-like device. You also earn money as you sleep. This can be used for quite a few things.
The ghoul will find your room at some point and start hammering away at the door. As long as your tools are available you can repair the door as it is but if the ghoul is strong enough it won't be long before the door is broken down and you're dead. If you have enough money you can buy a stronger door or when it's juuuuust about to be smashed to pieces you can watch an ad to replace it. If the ghoul isn't getting much of anywhere they'll wander off to try to get at someone else.
I would say Stay Room has a pretty surreal atmosphere to it when all you have to do is stay alive for six minutes and you've won the game; meanwhile you're hearing the ghoul attacking someone's door and/or them, but then you can either scroll around the house to see what's going on or just tap on the icon of the player whose door is getting pounded. Once the ghoul leaves you need to tap back on your icon because it'd be dumb to have to watch an ad to get your door replaced when you could've just paid for the replacement yourself that you earned.
It's hard to make it through all six minutes to the end, taking me a while as I got used to what I had to do (plus I kept on using the default character with no skills, which doesn't help). When I was looking stuff up for this game it said something about a ghost boss you go against if you make it through the night. I'm playing the iOS but not the Android version so that's either for the latter or it hasn't been implemented yet. Because a comment by the developer said they were just a small outfit and certain things hadn't been implemented yet such as networking the game against other actual live players rather than the computer generated ones. They need to fix some bugs too, such as the game and your character freezing up at times, which is ridiculous considering it's only within the first 30 seconds that you need to move them into a room and bed; sheesh.
The graphics are crap but the sound effects fare a bit better. And, unfortunately when you're generating money to upgrade your door, the ghoul is ALSO upgrading, as you get text messages stating this, so they move faster and get stronger.
So, what happens when you actually make it through a night? You unlock the "endless" mode.
There’s one very big room in the house. You enter it and get in bed as usual.
The ghoul comes out. I kept him at bay and at bay and at bay. Why won't he go away??
Oh, that’s right, it's the "endless" mode. I was still stuck on a ghost boss coming out that I'd fight like I had read earlier.
Keep him at bay and another ghoul comes out. And another. And another. I just quit after 4, making it to level 6 or something and lasting for six minutes. Not really worth it.
This is an interestinggame concept, especially with knowing beforehand that games are going to be six minutes or (a lot!) less. That’s refreshing right off the bat. I give this 3 out of 5 stars as it is. Might be worth checking out once more features are added and bug fixes performed. Or just get the hang out of what you're given for now and check it out more fully once it’s updated.
And as I stated earlier, for iOS and Android.
