OK, thank you very much for your information about your Bedlam tactics. I will keep playing Bedlam from time to time, and also try to make sometimes a video of the rare situation that I described. I am not able to "generate" this situation, so I have to wait until the lucky situation appears random any time. So I have to record every future Bedlam gameplay. When it happens, I will contact you over this forum and will post the Youtube link :-)
Yeah, I think in Tour de France I had some luck to get the time of 1:02, but also my practice in Hyper Chase helped me. I think, you or me will be able to get a time under 1 minute anytimes :-)
In Fortress of Narzod I don't have a tactic yet against these birds... Yeah, really ruthless! ;-)

Are you guys with these great scores using original hardware or modified controllers? Both original hardware and controller here, since it was stated that way in the rules. And I don't think my joystickless Starblast would have helped with any of these games, anyways There IS no way to switch between an "analog or digital mode" with the original Vectrex controller, which this contest called for usage of an original controller to be used ONLY. LATER EDIT: forgot about the two modes on Star Hawk, so maybe what I said originally isn't true. I can see how that can be taken both ways. Yes, I was using the original vectrex controller. Personally I would call game 1 digital since the joystick does not recenter which is much like a simulated digital control irregardless of how much resistance there is, while game 2 recenters with every move as an analog game would dependending on the extent that you move your joystick where the resistance increases with further movement. But either way, an analog controller is used to play. It's just game 1 simulated digital while game 2 takes advantage of the analog resistance. So yes, I was indeed referring to the different modes of gameplay. Glad you remembered them, though Are you taking about starhawks control modes, I think game 1 is slower but more precise (which I prefer). game 2 is faster and less precise. Both must use analog if using original controls. Yes, the two control modes in game. My explanation is above in response to VectorX. But yeah, I also found game 1 to be much easier to play. I do wonder though, since my joystick is quite loose, if game 2 would be easier with an accurate (new) stick. Now that that's all out of the way..

The final standings of Vector War IV are:1. coleco1981 (98,72%) 2. wazzal (95,96%) 3. Chainsaw (89,67%) Prizes 1 - 3 go to coleco1981, wazzal, and Chainsaw. The Random prize (Coupon for 1 game (max. $25) offered by Packrat Video games) will be drawn tonight. The highscores achieved in this Vector War IV are outstanding and reflect the high level of playing. Thank you all contestants for an exciting and challenging Vector War IV! Wow, I didn't think my scores were going to get me 2nd place! That is great news It was a fun competition with many good players, I'm glad I had the opportunity to partake in it! I found I really enjoyed Birds of Prey and V-Frogger. Conversely, although I used to enjoy Clean Sweep, playing it to the infinity levels left me more than satisfied ha ha Fortress of Narzod is one I will be playing more; I enjoy shooters like that and this one has a nice difficulty curve. I haven't found any successful strategies yet, it really keeps you on your toes. Reading everyone's explanations for Bedlam make me want to go back to it and see if I can learn some techniques; I didn't really have a strategy for it and just played by reaction. If I remember correct, I crashed one time, and I very slowed down one time to catch a "bottle" to refresh my "energy". So without a crash, a time below under 1 minute could be possible?! This game is not hard to play for me, because I often play Hyper Chase, and isn't Tour de France a kind of Hyper Chase, just with bicycles? Wow, well lets see if any of us can get in under 1 minute My strategy for that game was to stay in high gear and quickly go into a lower gear to make fast turns and avoid obstacles in the road. You're right, it is just like Hyperchase with bicycles! And fuel was a nice addition as well.

Good that we have the analog/digital/original controller question clarified. Some score statistic which shows the high level of playing in Vector War IV: Games played: 12 - New entries in international Vectrex highscore list: 2 (Birds of Prey, Tour de France) - New highscores in international Vectrex highscore list: 6 (Armor Attack, Bedlam, Clean Sweep, Rip Off, Spike, Star Hawk) - No new highscore in international Vectrex highscore list: 4 (Protector, Fortress of Narzod, Zantis, V-Frogger)

- New highscores in international Vectrex highscore list: 7 (Armor Attack, Bedlam, Clean Sweep, Rip Off, Spike, Star Hawk, V-Frogger) Say what? No one beat my over 30,000 score on V-Frogger on VectrexMad's site, if that's what you mean.

I've just corrected the stats in my above post.

So it's over now. I'm glad I'm not the last one, but it was close! And I'm sorry I couldn't play more, I was ill this week and didn't really had time to play Vectrex (but at leat, I discovered "Tour de France", which I never played before, and which I found actually fun!). Congratulations to the winners!

Previously I was photographing high scores for my own amusement, but that database looks like good place to share them in the future So it's over now. I'm glad I'm not the last one, but it was close! Luitoine, the main thing is that you participated and that you had fun playing Vectrex :-) Get well soon.
Oh, and a big big THANK YOU to hcmffm for organizing and manage the score table etc.
And nice, that here all people are so friendly and so big Vectrex friends :-)

And nice, that here all people are so friendly and so big Vectrex friends :-) I hope this means that you and others who just joined up will post more in regards to the Vectrex and anything else on this site, and not just for participating in the contest (Also funny to see the name ubersaurus [sp?] on here after all these years.) And on another note, due to file space storage on here being nearly maxed out, I'm going to be deleting the attachments from the contest. It won't be until later this week though, so if anyone needs their pics (unlikely, but you never know), better save them now. However, if scores are being transferred over to VectrexMad!'s site, I'll wait until I hear back from him too before anything goes bye-bye (which includes my own pics). So everyone double- and triple-check score entries to make sure everything's correct as well.

VectorX, thanks for hosting the Vector War in your cuddly Vector gaming forum. :-) As written in the original post, highscores will be transferred automagically to VectrexMad's international Vectrex highscore list. It would be cool if you could keep the pictures for let's say a week. Chainsaw: It was quite some work but a pleasure to organize the Vector War. And next year all this stuff will be ready at hand: scoring spreadsheet, rules, ... So prepare for a Vector War V in autumn 2015...

VectorX, thanks for hosting the Vector War in your cuddly Vector gaming forum. :-) You're welcome. "Cuddly" forum, though? Well, I guess if this ever needed a motto... "The Vector gaming forums: ones you can cuddle with as you cuddle your Vectrex!"Um... (pukes) It would be cool if you could keep the pictures for let's say a week. Ok, a week it is then.

Some strategy notes from me. On Fortress of Narzod, my strategy for the birds was pretty simple - fire a few shots toward the gate to begin with, as you may catch them there. On the first and third cliff stages, fire shots at the first big curve in the canyon - a lot of the times the birds will fly right into the rebounds. Assuming they make it past that point, just start moving around a LOT. Their shots will whiff if you can keep moving - your goal at that point should be, if you can't get a clear shot, to run past them. They won't fire up if you're behind them, and once they go off screen they don't come back. It gets tricky doing all this while still fighting the other enemies, but it works most of the time. On Armor Attack, I actually found one spot where the tanks will never get to you, and the helicopters almost always miss. let me see if I can attach the photo, but basically, what you do is get to the bottom of the screen and lure the tank to the center passageway, so that it's primarily moving horizontally. Then drive to the far bottom left corner, turn, and drive just a liiiittle bit past the corner wall to your right. If you positioned yourself in the center of the lane and did it all correctly, two things happen: 1) the tank will keep going back and forth, never approaching any closer, and 2) the helicopters will continue to spawn and will inevitably miss any opening missile salvos at you, giving you a perfectly clear shot from all the angles they come in at without even turning the jeep.I did this for an hour without getting so much as touched. It is possible for the choppers to hit the tank and respawn the map, but as long as you kill two of the new tanks and get the last one into the same position it works, even after they've sped up. flic.kr/p/qki3r4

Thank you hcmffm for organizing this and maintaining the score sheet. It was fun participating! I played many games that I played rarely or not even at all before. I especially liked playing Fortress of Narzod and Protector and I will definately play them more in the future. Its also great to see what scores are possible for good players.
