I'd say it was a bit of a lifesaver for Sega to make their Genesis (and possibly Master System controllers, I'm not sure) controllers compatible with the Atari 2600 and 7800 (for the latter games that only required one button).
Does anyone know why, though? Was Sega's attitude (even though Atari supposedly sued them for copyright infringement) something like "we'd like to give something back to the forefathers of video games, especially since 2600 and 7800 controllers aren't being produced any more"?
Just curious.
