Ok. I know I said I wouldn't get it as I no squat about American football... but it is an original Veccy game after all. (It's on its way.) The VGC rates it and I trust his judgement. Who's gonna give me a crash course on the rules?

Yeah, it ain't what's called "football" like in other parts of the world!
Basically when your team gets the football you try to make it into the goal at the end. You can either hand off the ball while the other team tries to tackle the player you handed the ball off to or you can pass it to someone (while the opposing team tries to tackle him or intercept the ball). You have four "downs" to try to make it at least 10 yards; if you can't make it at least 10 yards then the other team gets the ball to try to make it to the goal.
If you're able to score a "touchdown" (goal), that's six points, plus a kickoff is an extra point if that's successful. Then it'll be your turn to try to keep the opposing team from scoring. I think it's like 12 minutes per quarter for the game, as games can be lengthy (up to three hours, but that's when they're on tv and have a halftime show, timeouts, commercials and such. On video games they're usually a bit closer to taking actually 12 minutes per quarter!).
I don't know how many of these rules make up the game though; I assume there's several plays included with a few different passes and such (I've yet to play it, as I don't have it). b bierman ghoul has it, at least, so he should be able to fill you in on whatever I couldn't.

Nice one. That's very useful. To the casual observer it looks a cross between regular football (soccer?), rugby and judo. I'm hoping my copy will have instructions (although they're easy enough to find). It's just some of the terminology that might throw me.

I don't know much about the latter two, so I'll have to take your word on that ;D And I would say it isn't anything like soccer, but then our soccer's probably different than others' soccer. You can't physically tackle people in our soccer like you can with our football...if that made any sense. Most of the time the ball play can't be handled by anyone but the goalkeeper, but in football everyone can handle the ball that it's given or thrown to. And only the goalkeeper can throw the ball too in our soccer.
