First off, I never heard of Speed Freak until several years ago, due to this "internet" thing It's kind of odd too, since I've lived in Houston all my life, which had plenty of arcades back in the day -- Memorial City Mall had literally five game rooms at one point I do believe -- along with many convenience stores, movie theatres, bowling alleys, etc. had machines. And I played a good amount of the vector games too. So, when I got the ROM for MAME a few years ago...wow. When you hit something and your car shatters to pieces, that must've been a hoot in the arcades. I know decades later I still found it to be a bit spellbounding. Games with cinemas was still a pretty new thing.

That's a vector game, like Boxing Bugs and Demon, that I not only never played back in the day but never even laid eyes on. And I live in L.A. so it's not like I was wanting for arcades.
Is the Vectrex game Hyperchase anything close to Speed Freak or is it just a coincidence that they're both driving games?

Yeah, it's kind of odd. But then I don't know how many units of Speed Freak were made or anything like that (might be a clue). Also, I wasn't old enough to drive at that point, so it's not like I could've gone to a bunch of arcades, just several around me. But then it still wasn't at any of them either, nor at any local movie theatres or anything! Is the Vectrex game Hyperchase anything close to Speed Freak or is it just a coincidence that they're both driving games? No, it's a coincidence. With Hyperchase the perspective's different (your car and the road is smaller), there's no cinematics, and the cars keep on moving; it's not like with Speed Freak when you stop and they stop. There's probably several other differences but I don't know what they are since I haven't played much of Hyperchase (since I don't have that one...yet!). Nice for this thread to get a reply though, btw

I just came back from California Extreme and attempted to play Speed Freak... and sucked at it. But it is a beautiful looking game with a nice cabinet, I'm glad I got a chance to play it.

I just came back from California Extreme and attempted to play Speed Freak Wow, that's terrific!! The controls are pretty tough in getting used to. Our annual, local gaming expo comes up in November. It'd be great if someone got a machine and brought it but that's wishful thinking. Other vector games that have been brought in over the years include Warrior, Star Trek, Star Wars, Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Major Havoc, Black Widow, Tempest, Space Duel, Aztarac (couldn't play since someone broke off the joystick ), Battlezone, Lunar Lander, Quantum and Space Wars. Anyway, did you get any pics?

Ah yes, Warrior, another rare game that wasn't at California Extreme. But I have the Vectrex version coming so maybe that's why I wasn't too disappointed, hahaa. Maybe George can port Speed Freak to the Vectrex now that he's offering that driving/paddle controller?
I did take a couple pictures of Speed Freak with my Droid phone, didn't come out that great. I also took some pictures with my crappy point-and-shoot film camera, I'll have to get those developed and see if they're better. It was hard getting pictures of anything there since the whole place was pretty crowded. I don't think I got a picture of The Empire Strikes Back though outside of the marque it would just look like a Star Wars game, anyway. What I really needed was a video camera and a couple hours with the room cleared of gamers. Ya, good luck with that.

Maybe that's what Night Trucker is, just with a few slight changes If not, there aren't many driving games for the Vectrex, so that'll fill a big ol' gaping hole in the library, at least. I did take a couple pictures of Speed Freak with my Droid phone, didn't come out that great. My mom just got an iPad. Really marvelous engineering there, but not that great a camera though. When they don't come out blurry, our over 10 year old digital camera takes better pictures than the iPad does! It was hard getting pictures of anything there since the whole place was pretty crowded. What I really needed was a video camera and a couple hours with the room cleared of gamers. Ya, good luck with that. Yeah, pictures are good to get at 10 a. m. or something. A friend of mine had no trouble going to the arcade at 9 or 10 a. m. at PhillyClassic several years ago. Other than that, any later in the day (like noon-ish until closing) there was a 10-15 minute wait on pretty much any game there, if not longer.

Out of curiosity, what would be the preferred way to post any pics?

You'd have to host them elsewhere first, like with Flickr or Photobucket, then click on the Insert Image button with the url to them once those are uploaded to one of those services.
Looking forward to some pics!

Crap. What if I don't have, and no intention of having, a Flickr or Photobucket presence? Is there no way to directly load in a few pictures?

No, Proboards doesn't allow that, that'd just add to bandwidth costs (or at least that's what I assume is the deal) if they hosted pics themselves.
If you want though, you can e-mail them to me and I can post them, just as long as there isn't like 50 of them or something (that'd take a while!).

Hope to see some pictures of this cabinet. I finally have a working joystick for mame. Fun game maybe because I hit everything but the plane and the roadblock. LOL!

I have only ever seen this game a few times in the uk ,maybe at a traveling fair ground arcade. My most vivid memory is of course the road side objects like the man, cactus and the cow, real fluid movement though nice and smooth.
