Hello everyone, I was wondering what all parts I should replace or adjustments I should make to try and fix the following Vectrex problem. I get a high pitched whining sound from the top of the monitor, and the screen starts warping, with the vectors on screen scaling up and down, etc. I notice on Pole Position that the vectors bounce around quite a bit, I was told this was indicative of a particular problem but I can't remember what they had said. Based on what's on console5.com I was thinking of doing the cap kit, integrator circuit cap kit, and power supply diodes. A year or so ago I re centered the monitor and also reset the DAC, although it seems to have gotten slightly off to the left again. Also, the Vectrex monitor is seeming to take an extra 5 or so seconds to start up, I don't see a picture or hear it buzzing until much longer than it used to take to start up. Any help is appreciated as I don't know what to try other than the cap kit, not sure what's causing this. Based on what I was reading on the integrator circuit on console5 the styrene caps can degrade over time and decrease the accuracy of the vectors being drawn.

Replacing the integrator caps is highly recommended. Mind your logic board revision (a sticker will say 2GE or 3GE) and order the appropriate cap kit from Console5. That would be a good place to start, as that might stabilize and hopefully "clean up" those vectors some. Probably wouldn't hurt to pull that 6522 VIA chip, clean the legs & socket, then reseat it (only if it's socketed to begin with). Let us know how you get on after that. Good luck!

Thanks for your response. I just responded to you on Atariage as well. I did the main cap kit, integrator cap kit and power diodes. It fixed the issue with the screen tearing and going completely haywire while playing Every Day is Halloween. I still get blooming / scaling on a couple of games with lots of big vectors, namely the arcade version of Armor Attack on VecFever, and KnightEx the Joust clone. For the sound issues I've ordered the Buzz Off kit to hopefully fix that. Which chip is the 6522 VIA chip? Is that the main processor for the Vectrex? The thought of pulling chips off the boards on this 39 year old console is definitely a bit intimidating. But I do want to get it up to working 100 percent. I see the scaling / warping issue as a sign that something related to drawing the vectors is slowly on its way out. Since I watched gameplay footage of someone playing Knightex, and they didn't have the same issue of the screen scaling down any time a character warped from one side of the screen to the other.
