MooMcCowson received his wooden spoon prize. Thank you, Tony! Shall I send a complementary can of surströmming to go with the spoon? Search YouTube for "tasting surströmming" and you will find humor.

I like that idea. Add a glass of milk. But far as I know, carrying surströmming is forbidden on certain airlines, so that rules out air-mail for the spoon

Haha, we watched a video and we were gagging just watching all the people in the video gagging. I know it is not in the same league but I got sardines for the kids to try for the first time the other day. They liked the taste but not seeing the actual fish/parts. I'm guessing none of us would be able to handle surströmming.

I've always wanted to try Surstromming, as well as Hakarl, but prepared and served the traditional way.
I assume it's like any very strong food, for example marmite. A raw spoon of marmite is disgusting. But a tiny ammount on buttered bread is delicious.
These YouTube idiots shoving handfuls into their mouth for a reaction are obviously going to be sick.
How is Surstromming, when done correctly?

How is Surstromming, when done correctly? You are correct in that shoving a spoonful of it in your mouth directly from the can like the youtube-idiots is indeed not the traditional way of eating it. This is my unbiased observations regarding the consumption of surströmming. Surströmming taste surprisingly little considering the odor of slow rotting death it has. Despite being a Swede FROM Sweden, living IN Sweden, I have ever only eaten it two times in my life so far. The traditional way of eating it is served on a piece of hard flat bread together with cut chives in sour cream. The taste of surströmming alone is like something dead from the sea, salty with a "I should not be eating this or I will be sick"-feeling to it. When put on a buttered flat bread and eaten together with sour cream with cut chives in it, it tastes like the "end of summer". Sure I am exaggerating now, but the taste that you actually feel in your mouth when eating it is still "hurry up and get through this" but the social thing of daring to eat it together with friends and family is more like "I am going to lie and say this tastes way better than it actually does just make those who made the right decision to not eat it feel bad about themselves and regret they did not try". Bottom line, it tastes like death from the sea. But because of that fact alone, you WILL feel better about yourself IF you do try it. Strange reverse psychology there that I can not fully explain. Because the cans are pressurized from the inside because of the not yet finished fermentation process, there are strict rules about how a can of surströmming may be transported. You can not pack one in your luggage when traveling by air. You will regret it SOOOO much if you do. However, Swedes are not the most crazy of the Nordic countries when it comes to dead and rotting food. Iceland's Surhaj (sour shark directly translated) is taking it to new levels of crazy, I have heard. Rumors of buried in the ground and peed on to make it rot faster may or may not be entirely true. I haven't eaten nor smelled it, so I wouldn't know.

^Good lord, is there ANY good to that food whatsoever? Is it high in vitamins, nutrients and/or minerals?

Note that there is a difference between 'fermentation' and 'just letting things rot'. From what I have read, the meat of the Islandic shark (and that of several other fish) is poisonous in its natural state, and the process of fermentation is what actually makes it edible.
