Lets say the video game crash of '83-'84 didn't happen until a few years down the road, or the Vectrex was introduced a few years earlier.
As I was talking to TrekMD about it, what might've happened?
I'd say the Vectrex would've lasted probably five years. Maybe a Vectrex 2 would have come out later, being less bulky/heavy and with a faster processor? The handheld would've definitely made it this time around, I'd say.
What else? Unreleased games (whatever Berzerk II was going to be), maybe the color Vectrex, Atari vector ports...

I think the Vectrex II would have been a color unit and we would have seen official ports of several vector arcade games such as Star Wars. I think the system would have been made with a better processor and more memory to allow for even more sophisticated games. A handheld vector system would have been fantastic too!
Insofar as the original Vectrex console, I think games would have started to come with enhancements to push the limits of the console, much like Atari 2600 games (look at games like Pitfall II or Stargate on the 2600). We certainly know that would have been doable given what we've seen from the homebrewers.

Ye I've heard of the portable Vectrex ideas, but i don't understand how you'd ever get a vector monitor to fit in your pocket? I too would be more interested in a "Vectrex Macro" rather than "Vectrex Micro".
Perhaps a commercial Vectrex model would have been promising, for arcades, with the game carts (and overlays) just switchable internally by the owner. Would have allowed for a more invested powerful console and possibly extended the life of Vector games.

Aaaahhh!! A 15 inch screen would be nice. Yeah that's something I had thought is to have a slightly bigger screen. There'd have to be a switch or something in order to get the display to go back to the original game/Vectrex specifications though (since it would HAVE to be compatible with the original Vectrex!).

Not quite parallel universe but what would happen in a fairer universe: what I was dreaming about and voicing on rec.games.vectrex the other day was, what if the new Vectrex iPad/iPhone App that is coming out really took off, and the same developers would be encouraged to develop games for it that (with little modification or no modification if their Vectrex app was really true) would also run on a real Vectrex....

That sounds like a nice idea to me. If only it could become real... Well it might just become real. I asked the question on rec.games.vectrex about the iPad/Phone app company writing games for their Vectrex app which would subsequently work on the Vectrex, and about Vectrex homebrewers having a new channel for their Vectrex games and here's the reply: "That's definitely what we're aiming for! (on both counts - new Vectrex games, plus using the app as a channel for Vectrex developers worldwide to access the mass-market of the App Store). I should add to everyone reading that if you are, or know, a Vectrex developer or studio with games to feature on the platform (we already have agreements with a number, and will be publicising this information in due course) then get in touch with me: hello@vectrexregeneration.com. Vectrex has been under-represented in gaming history, and we want to try to redress the balance! Best wishes Anton. " so fingers crossed for the future.....
