I always thought Spud had a cigar in his mouth, but it turns out it was a misshapen arm :/ Peer... why are you messing with my childhood? Also, I always thought it was weird that Spike smiled while his love interest was being kidnapped.

I always thought Spud had a cigar in his mouth, but it turns out it was a misshapen arm :/ Peer... why are you messing with my childhood? No, I do not think that this is a misshapen arm. The way the vectors-list is designed and drawn (the sequence of the vectors) clearly suggests that this is not an arm, but indeed a cigar. Who knows? Maybe he didn't in some earlier development version?

Yes, I saw that picture too, and it shows yet another Spud version, which might have existed during development? But the way the cigar is drawn definitely suggests that they wanted to draw a cigar here, while using a DIFFY-style list (no moves). Had they wanted to draw an arm, even a misshapen one, they could and very likely would have done it just like they did with Spud's left arm.
So I am very sure your childhood memories are safe. I did not own Spike as a child. Only played it at a friend's place. And I never noticed the cigar then, so it came as a surprise to me now.

The boxes can be exaggerated though. If you look at something like this there aren't four enemies AND the starbase together, along with that many Klingons and Romulans onscreen at once.

Faith in my childhood memories restored! Now, if only I could go back and convince my young self to buy that 3D Imager instead of the used 10-speed.

^Yeah, I wish I could've bought that too, when it was only for $99

Faith in my childhood memories restored! Now, if only I could go back and convince my young self to buy that 3D Imager instead of the used 10-speed. The 3D Imager was never available in the area where I lived as a child. I only saw it once in an advertising leaflet, and it remained a mystery to me whether such a thing really existed. I was able to buy a lightpen though, which seemed to be the only one that ever made it to the local toy store, and I was pretty proud of it. Cannot remember the price it sold for then.

Wow, awesome article about Spud, and never noticed these graphic mistakes in the short sequence. Also the information about sound sampling on your website are very interesting to read. About the picture on the box: Yeah, also the European version of Spike shows the same picture. A lot of the boxes seem to be exaggerated, and just drawn by some marketing people, without showing a picture of the real game play. Oh and maybe interesting for Peer is, how many bugs are in this game, just copying the links, without embedding here: Score cheat / bug: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qdX-R0-M6USpike doesn't die after loosing last life bug: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZZ9Kct05ok(Note: In these 15 year old videos, in the description is mentioned, that the videos are done for an article on a website named Retrozentrale. This website was shutdown many years ago already and doesn't exist anymore.)
