I think there was an issue where if you played it to long, it was either unresponsive or it created a drawn note.

And I agree that Spike and the Angry Vortex would be better without Spike. What would you like to see instead of Spike? Remembering that the character can kick left and right to hit the floating enemys (you can't kick the horizontal or vertical walls) May 10, 2013 at 3:40pm gliptitude said: If he doesn't finish this game I would love to "steal" the grid runner layout for a different Vectrex game. ... Please do it would be interesting to see, feel free to rip and re-use any of my posted assembly code - i'm not precious about it! Hey awesome! .. I also would rather see a ship or some other kind of vehicle, and i think i said the same on AtariAge back when you first posted. .. But i guess with the kicking left and right this wouldn't work.

Hello again gliptitude,
Maybe I can turn the kick animation into some sort of left/right shield... For those who didn't see this feature, Spike can 'kick' ether of his legs out to knock out the diamonds when they are close. In the waves without walls its a good way to up your score quickly, but means 'skimming' close the enemies in order to do it, introducing some risk/reward to the gameplay - so I wouldn't want remove this aspect.
If I remember correct, I was going to add an explosion effect to show when you hit an enemy, a proper respawn for the player character, and some sound. I think I had removed pretty much all of the glitches in the game as it stood, and the moving background grid zeros itself much better on a real vectrex now.
I will try to update the links on my blog soon, maybe use dropbox or something for sharing...
ps. Do you want the code for the scrolling grid? I think I still have my original test program for this somewhere.

Welcome Garry! I didn't try your games yet (I will very soon ), but just to say: I like Spike (even if it seems I'm the only one here ).

What I had proposed on the "Vectrex games that *should* come out" thread ages ago: what I thought Spike was originally (before I actually got it myself ), where there were several screens per level. I didn't know the entire game took place on one screen. It'd be cool for a sequel of Spike 2: The Second Story to have where you climb to the top, the screen would scroll to a second one, which was different from the first (like with Donkey Kong where every screen was different). Maybe the second one would have you jumping over things that rolled down (like with D. Kong). Third screen, who knows. Just an idea

Would you like to see the same type of skewed perspective screen, or a simple 2d design like donky kong? I'm not saying I'll do it, but it's an interesting idea to play with.

That's cool, it doesn't really matter to me. I didn't have any real ideas towards gameplay, other than making to the top of a screen, the action would freeze, then scroll up to the next area. That was about it. Whether or not you do it, welcome onboard anyway

Hey, great that you've found your way here, Greg. :-) Your game prototypes look good, would be cool if you'd fine-tune some games a bit (e.g. Vec Wars Devolved). Thanks for your effort in Vectrex programming! :-)

I've quite enjoyed your programming, garryg! I have noticed the link for you "provisionally titled 'Lamp'" WIP has been down for quite a while at your Blog. Might you re-upload it?
I am rather looking forward to see what is to come concerning Vec Wars! The dual stick option mentioned by 50tbrd sounds a lot more enjoyable over directional shooting via buttons, though both ways would still be fun. And I have enjoyed playing through "Spike and the Angry Vortex Bird". In fact, I've played through that the most out of your work.
Nice to see you on the forums!

Welcome Garry! I didn't try your games yet (I will very soon ), but just to say: I like Spike (even if it seems I'm the only one here ). I like spike as well. Is there a type of game anyone would like to see him in? I would like to see Spike in a Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) style of game. Spike and the rest of the character from his universe, plus new ones would dance on the screen. This game might be a great title to provide a platform for a character mashup from all of the other games for the Vectrex. Who wouldn't like to see Major Havoc dancing next to Spike? Obviously another part to the game would be the adaptation of a dance pad to work with the game. Especially difficult given that any combination moves could not be accomplished by using only the joystick interface. Perhaps the combo move would be altered to be a foot movement (joystick) and a hand movement (two or more buttons) Still, it would be a fun thing to try out Spike's DDR game even if only the standard the controller were available for game play. I would like to see the title available as a one or two player game since much of the fun of DDR is playing with your friends.

Who wouldn't like to see Major Havoc dancing next to Spike? Hah, never would've pictured Major Havoc doing the Funky Chicken or anything Plus if there's Spike vs. Spud, if Spud were to lose, a bucket from Spike's Water Balloons (shouldn't that have been Spud's Water Balloons, by the way?) could be dumped on his head at the end of a round.

I've had an idea for a while for a Spike themed game that utilized the Nintendo Power Pad. It was my idea to have a mash-up style game with characters and ships in a World Class Track Meet style game. Spike competes in events where you have to press button 3 and button 4 extremely fast in succession to make him win his events. Ive thought it'd be really cool to modify a NES Power Pad but it really has no bearing on the programming of the game. You would compete against other GCE characters like the Armor Attack Tank, the Berzerk Android, the Star Trek Mother Ship, Narzod Hurler, Clean Sweep vacuum, etc. I'd really like to the characters different sizes and different heights, all animated with movement, Spike does his hop, the Star Trek ship hovers and rotates, maybe the Scramble ship drops bombs. Was thinking the name could be Spike's All-Star Olympics.
I've opened up the Power Pad but haven't been successful in modifying it just yet.
I don't know about a DDR style game, not a fan of them but I wouldn't mind a Parappa the Rapper type game featuring Spike.
