I played the arcade game at Funspot last year and found it very addicting. If you haven't played it, MAME doesn't cut it - you need to play the arcade cabinet.
If an "arcade perfect" port were possible, I think this would be a great title for the Vectrex.
What do you guys think?

I've never played Space Encounters so I decided to do some digging. I found an article describing the arcade at The International Arcade Museum ( Space Encounters) and a video on YouTube. It does look like a game that could be ported to the Vectrex!

Yeah, I played many games of it (since they're short) at two expos in a row here. I vaguely remembered seeing it at a local game room but couldn't recall if I ever played it or not from back in the day. Now I want to own one eventually! Good call Rob

Without the light up cabinet it might get boring fast. I miss the 1980's were a simple gimmick could make a game interesting.

Without the light up cabinet it might get boring fast. Only if you're watching someone else play; I doubt it'd be a deterrent while playing, like with probably most of us dismissing the annoying buzz while we're playing Vectrex Here's a review I did on Space Encounters, by the way: www.stageselect.com/27113--Reviews--space-encounters.aspx

OK, so if the game gets ported to the Vectrex, who is making the "Flight Controller" for it to emulate the arcade?

Yeah, that light must help immerse the player into the game and was way ahead of its time, perhaps the early forerunner for today's ambilight technology by Philips ...?

Nice review, VectorX! Star Strike. I was thinking it looked familiar to an Intellivision game. Not a big fan of Star Strike, but if it had the ambilight television Vectrexmad mentioned, it would be better. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the mini-cabinet, Retrocade.

Thanks. It was nice being able to play it too Hopefully again this November at the next expo! Star Strike. I was thinking it looked familiar to an Intellivision game. Not a big fan of Star Strike, It looked great, but wasn't a good game. S. Encounters blows it away, even though it had sub-par graphics for an arcade game at the time.

Back then it was all about the arcade at home feel. Unfortunately, lots of home versions have not aged very well in comparison to the arcades they were based upon. So for the time it was okay if it was close, now with todays systems close is just not acceptable.
Also might explain why fans still want the arcade versions they played in their youth.

Star Strike is just an OK game. I've played it both on the Intellivision and the 2600 and it just isn't as fun. The Intellivision has better graphics but they are not enough to make up for the gameplay.
Space Encounters appears to be more fun but I'd have to try it out myself to see what I think.

The earlier video doesn't seem to be available anymore. Looking at both Space Encounter and Star Strike, Star Strike just doesn't do it justice. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jINxUVvVxnE

Chris, that's much more dynamic and has a better playfield. Too much "negative space" in the other games.
