I just received my copy of Vectrexians a couple of weeks ago. The more I play it, the more I notice the bad collision detection in this game. Many times I've noticed my missiles going straight up through the middle of a Galaxian and nothing happens. Sometimes, my missile goes straight up through the middle of one Galaxian and destroys the Galaxian directly above it.
For the most part I enjoy playing it, but the collision detection issue takes some of that enjoyment away. This title isn't as polished as Tutstronix's Vector Pilot masterpiece.

Doesn't it have a calibration screen? Does that not help in your case?

Doesn't it have a calibration screen? Does that not help in your case? I guess I'll have to read the instructions and post an update.

Doesn't it have a calibration screen? Does that not help in your case? During the Galaxian Legacy I've also noticed the problem of collision detection. The problem can be seen in ClassicGameRoom's Vectrexians Review, beginning at 0'48": Mark fires 15 shots altogether, three shots just fly through the enemies without hitting them. I might be wrong, but I think that calibration won't affect collision detection: Calibration will calibrate the display of the vectors (e.g. align horizontally & vertically or align with the overlay). X/Y coordinates of objects are stored internally and collision detection compares position of your shot with the position of the enemy using those internal values. Although collision detection has a flaw, I still think that Vectrexians is a pretty cool and well done game. Personally, I consider the a bit faulty collision detection as some extra challenge. ;-)

Too bad about that then. Sounds like it was corrected with Vector Pilot though.

Hi all, Well, Calibration is definetly of importance for a proper collision detection on Vvectrexians. Thanks to the calibration, the slightly 'imperfect' vector drawings (who are slightly drifting away) are compensated in such a way that the final drawing locations on the screen are matching with the internally managed coordinates. There might be a trick, what I noticed on most of the youtube movies, is that most people, when doing the calibration, are focussing on 'horizontal' alignment and not on the 'vertical' alignment. The only good movie about this (thus far) is the one of WizdawG (The winner of the Vectrexians Deluxe cart). This movie can be seen here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz0NEZhIj7sTake a look at 1:50 and beyond. True, the calibration is performed on the minestorm variations, but the concept is the same. A properly calibrated setup looks like the picture on 1:59. During the development of Vectrexians, I have tested it on various vectrexes (even some vectrexes that required a recap and that displayed slightly distorted images of the enemies), but the collision detection always seemed to work, after a proper calibration of course. Hope that this helps. And now back to Vector Patrol ;-) Kristof

A sign of the master himself! Thank you for enlightening us, Kristof. ;-)
I'll make sure to calibrate properly when playing next time...

A sign of the master himself! I've seen IP addresses from Belgium before, wondering if it was indeed him or not, at times Looks like it was!

During Vector War III I've played Vectrexians. During the games I've played the problem with collision detection no longer occured. I'd like to know whether other people can also confirm that calibration fixes the problem.
@admins: Could you please change the topic title to something like: "Vectrexians - Problem with collision detection"?

^Done Rob, let me know if you want me to change it back.

I have calibrated Vectrexians and the collision detection issues are still there. If I have time, I'll make a video.
