Seems like a shame to mess up a perfectly good cosmetic controller trying to fix a bad joystick spring. Since the metal thumb piece can be unscrewed, I wonder if a small conical spring could be placed back under the thumb piece to both provide resistance and self-center the joystick.

I've never tried myself, but opening a Vectrex controller really seems to be a pain in the a**. But I doubt that a broken controller spring can be fixed with a non-invasive external repair or fixture.

Is it possible to find 9-pin D-sub female connector for Vectrex controller? Where I can buy it today? Standart D-sub connector has "ears", so it can not fit into Vectrex connector. I need something like this:

I always build them myself by modifying a D-9 sub connector. You drill out the holes on the side that are used for the retaining screws. The connector will then split up into two parts. Remove the metal case and use Loctite to cement the two plastic parts back together. You'll need this type of connector:
