I almost anything would make the light pen more desirable and more that just utilitarian.
One button adds a dynamic to its functionality and homebrew capabilities but even more buttons gives more dynamic to what you can do inside a game.
The one on ebay, uses both controller ports so you don't have to use two hands to play a game. Is there any reason why a homebrew game couldn't be designed to use the buttons signals through controller port 2?

Hi 50tbrd, I think the 2 controller ports are just to give compatibility with existing software which needs both a joystick plugged in (for buttons) and a lightpen in port 2. The lightpen uses the input for button 4 iirc so any other button (or 3 buttons) can be used if making a lightpen-only game/app.
