As you may know, I recently bought WebWarp. For the moment, I didn't manage to get more than 9 trophies (I could have done more once, but my dinner was burning and I thought that the game would pause if I didn't leave the trophy room, but it wasn't the case, and I was dead when I came back from the kitchen ). Anyway, this morning I went to work, as usual, but when I went back, the plush-lamb who usually just sits on my couch was playing the Vectrex, and he was pretty good. Look what incredible high score he just made: picture (click to enlarge)!

The power of the plush-lambs?
Just as long as he doesn't wind up like Chucky! (laughs at "score"!)

Wow, impressive score - make sure you submit it to the international Vectrex highscore list hosted at www.vectrex.co.uk. . I didn't expect that the Vectrex programmers actually implemented a 32 bit highscore counter. So your plush-lamb actually revealed another long-kept secret of the Vectrex.

^It also has some amazing graphics! That highest score possible looks like paper!

Hey, you missed the real overlay: it says "WebLamb"!! By the way, how many trophies are there? I´ve got the overlay recently, and I´m delighted with the velocity and addictiveness of this (often misunderstood) game.

The manual says there are 20 trophies, but as mentionned I didn't manage to get more than 9 for the moment (and the plush-lamb refuses to spoil the game to me by telling me how many there actually are )

The manual says: "No one has ever captured the elusive 20th creature, can you?" Mistery! I don´t have a magical plush-lamb, but I want do the try

I think there's actually more than 20. There's some invisible ones or something. We'll have to wait until glip gets here, as I forget what the deal is exactly with those extras.

Yeah we determined in the past that the manual basically tells the truth about the number of trophies, but that the game does continue after the 20th until you lose all your lives. It is claimed and demonstrated by others that there are several "invisible" trophies that may be caught, which then show up in the trophy room as small lines and dots in the margins. I have gotten all 20 with lives to spare on several occassions but I have never managed to catch an invisible one. .. When you are that deep in the game it becomes a bit unfair and you often end up crashing into trophies that look like you have captured cleanly, (after 10 or 12 I usually end up trying to catch them from the side on purpose to avoid crashing, and a couple other awkward techniques work sometimes too), ... So I'm really not sure what a good strategy would be to even attempt these 20+ ones without being able to see them. ... Just randomly capturing I guess, or maybe if you study the patterns of the first 20 you can develop some predictive intuition about where and when they appear?

You might be able to turn the brightness up on your Vectrex to show the invisible creatures when you get that far into the game, just like revealing the invisible mines on the versions of Mine Storm that has them and where the helicopter is to appear in Armor Attack.

Well, I finished for today. 15 in my room. You´re right, gliptitude: truely catch these damned bugs is a very difficult thing, from the tenth or so. I'll have to buy one of those lambs..

Yep i really love this game and to me it defines not just Vectrex but also vector gaming. Substantially better than Tempest in my opinion, in spite of its flaws and its comparative lack of dedicated computing power.
.. I typically capture 10 or 12 trophies in my first life, and then get stuck in a sequence of abrupt crashes, ending up with 15 to 17 when the game ends. Sometimes though the crash bug begins earlier, after 8 trophies.
.. Last week i built a prototype for a Web Wars arcade cabinet, which is just a Vectrex packaged like a cabaret style arcade, with a fresnel lens to magnify the display. .. I just built a wood frame basically to test if the design will work and to see how big it is and if it is a pleasing enough looking object to justify building. .. I'll post pics if I go any further with it.

Hi all, sorry if this is a stupid question or been answered a million times already, but I just recently started researching Vectrex programming and was wondering: is the source for the original games available? If so, has anybody attempted to modify Web Wars (or other games) and fix some of their "flaws"? I find Web Wars to be a game with so much potential that just needs some polish here and there to make it a classic...

There HAVE been some modern program revisions of old Vectrex games, but none of Web Wars and personally I do not know what the source material is/was or how it gets decifered. There is at least one hack of Mine Storm and there is a "2-D hack" of Narrow Escape (otherwise only playable with 3D imager). I believe both of these are by Fred Taft. There is "disassembler" software freely available, but I don't know how this works or if it is able to represent the existing game rom's in a way that can be easily recognized and interpreted by a programmer or not. These questions would be better suited to the programming section of these forums. Why don't you start a new topic there?
