Reviewing this thread i am unclear if anyone here actually ever played Warrior. Articles I read say the game and the machine were very glitchy and generally failed in the arcades. So I guess the possibility that this game was sort of never fully realized, but had such great potential and an attractive concept, all just makes it a really outstanding candidate for a Vectrex revival. ... Among the small handful of Warrior videos on youtube, there is one with decent sound. There is a constant kind of pulse noise, which seems very tense and appropriate, cinematic. I wonder if that sound survives in the Vectrex release? ... Also, I can't think of any Vectrex game (or vector game) in which animation is such a fundamental part of the gameplay. Normally it seems more like a static object moving, sometimes a very small object with a very small animated routine (such as web wars' flapping wings). The character walking in Dark Tower is something I guess, but not very fluid or impressive. The closest thing I can think of is the player death animation in Fortress of Narzod (one of my favorite things to look at on the Vectrex). ... The wikipedia article on Warrior I think mentions something about "crude motion capture techniques" and I wonder what this could possibly mean in this context? I wonder how challenging this game was to make, compared to other Vectrex games, and weather or not the animation was a significant part of that, what it might prove to the Vectex community/other programmers? ..Really can't wait to see this game.

Yeah I never played the original, even though I had a photo of myself taken in front of one less than 10 years ago Yes, next time it reappears at a gaming expo I'm definitely going to bug some passerby into playing a game! So I don't know anything about the animation other than the attract mode, which just showed the warriors approaching each other, clashing swords a few times, then one of them fell into a bit, swirling away into nothing, and that's it.

There was one at Golfland (Southern Hills...RIP) when I was a kid. It was THE big game, at least for a while.
gliptitude, I think Warrior was fully realized, but it was a new concept at the time. I think that the addition of a 1-player mode would have made the game feel more complete.
As far as animation goes, yes Warrior has some great effects. For the translation from arcade to Vectrex, it's simply been a matter of re-creating the animation from the original images. Though I have enhanced the details a bit during some sword movements.
War of the Worlds 2011 also has a 15-frame Tripod walk cycle, while the arcade WOTW had roughly the equivalent of a 12-frame walk cycle. I also did various detailed frame animations for I, Cyborg. My upcoming sequel will take animation on the Vectrex to a whole new level.

My upcoming sequel will take animation on the Vectrex to a whole new level. Whoa, damn...I'm drooling there! ;D I'll bet there will be more unique bosses too.

Yeah, definitely! It's also getting a facelift, and will have a more modern feel to it. I plan to get "concept" screenshots up for both Tail Gunner 2012 and I, Cyborg II within the next few weeks.

Wow. Exciting time to be a Vectrex fan. Really awesome for me personally, having only even heard of the Vectrex a few months ago and accessing so much so quickly. I've been on a major vector binge for almost 2 months now!
Awesome to get your responses FURY. I've already said here how excited I am to see you produce an overlay for a game. I've been reading around different stuff on your games and some discussion of overlays, how expensive it is for you, and of course the added expense this amounts to in the product people purchase. I was just going to say I think it could be awesome if maybe you produced one single multi-purpose overlay for players to use with all of your games, with a Fury logo or something at the bottom. I'd buy it!

I like the idea of a multi-purpose over-lay. As I mentioned somewhere else on this board I use a sheet of blue acrylic (I think it is anyway..) permanently in situ 'cos I cant be bothered to keep swapping screens. If I'm going to be honest, for that same reason, I probably won't bother getting Warrior because I know I'll get fed up fiddling with the over-lay. (Don't tell George )

I'll survive For those who are interested, there are 8 games remaining for pre-order.

I'll survive Phew! I've been up all night worrying since I wrote that. George. What do you think of a multi-purpose overlay? A block colour with a fancy edge with a Vectrex logo? Could you get something like that organised? I'd buy one (or two, if there were a couple of options).

Yeah, let me get that organized right away To be honest, I think that there are plenty of fairly generic, single-color overlays out there already. And some games look great without an overlay. You mentioned that you didn't want Warrior because it comes with an overlay, yet you do want special generic overlays made up. Most people either want game-specific overlays, or no overlays at all.

Yeah that does sound a bit contradictory. I like an over-lay to cut down flicker and to give an element of colour - as opposed to a monochrome tv screen. What I can't be doing with is changing screens every time I slot a new game in. Hence my keeping a plain blue home made jobby. (I think it's acetate, not acrylic, but whatever... ) So if you put on hold Warrior, Cyborg II, Tailgunner... that'd be great!! ps your point about some of the existing overlays being plain enough to use on all games is valid... its just I have a thing about playing, lets say War of the Worlds if the screen says Blitz across the bottom. Maybe it's just me...

I understand the annoyance of changing the overlays. For me, the solution was simply to not use overlays, but I realize that a lot of people don't like that. It's very expensive to have them screenprinted. I would suggest creating your own generic overlay the way you want, since you just need to make one or two. Here's a technique that turned out some great results for the author: maxwell.fief.org/overlay.html

Thanks for that George. I had a skim through making a mental note of required items and then had a price-up on ebay. Perhaps I'll stick with my sheet of blue plastic (acetate, acrylic, whatever)!! If (and I'm only saying if ) you did get around to knocking up a generic over-lay, how many would you need to make and shift to make it worth your while? I know there was a guy, in the UK I think, and he might even be a member here, offering a Minestorm / Pole Postion combo, but it was quite expensive, bearing in mind it was two sheets of rigid plastic.(Pole Position always struck me as a odd choice - great game, but not easy to get hold of over here in the UK. I got my copy from JD.)
